Default robber barons

A disparaging term dating back to the 12th century which refers to:

1. Unscrupulous feudal lords who amassed personal fortunes by using illegal and immoral business practices, such as illegally charging tolls to passing merchant ships.

2. Modern-day businesspeople who allegedly engage in unethical business tactics and questionable stock market transactions to build large personal fortunes.

One of the American industrial or financial magnates of the late 19th century who became wealthy by unethical means, such as questionable stock-market operations and exploitation of labor. A feudal lord who robbed travelers passing through his domain

nodog: I'm not sure what your point is, but I will engage it just a bit. One of the things I have observed that some people do is push the limits of the law or knowingly nudge across the line in the pursuit of amassing a fortune. I think there is a lot of this. Law is just unable to keep up with the cleverness of aggressive, greedy people. These people could be viewed as "not playing well with others." Some people get ahead by hard work, cleverness, luck, diligence, granted. But there are lot of others who get ahead by other means. I'm not going to talk about outright crooks like the Enron crowd or the WorldCom crowd. How about builders? Does anyone know of any marginally lawful conduct that builders pursue? Any edgy practices that can improve their profit margins a little? Bankers?

But this is the nature of things. I'm not sure what the answer is. Put the economy under the control of the federal government, all business transactions subject to the consideration and approval of the People's Committee of Equitable Practices? Let the government control all economic transactions to limit all profits to some "fair" amount, say 10% maximum, all excesses confiscated by the Glorious People's Exchequor and Treasury for Public Redistribution?

The robber barons were the type who had children working in coal mines and factories under lousy conditions. So, yes, some regulation can be a good thing. The question is only where to draw the line.

One has to ask oneself what type of ethics are being taught to business majors at the left leaning colleges of today. Sounds like "WIN at all Cost" or "Me Me Me". Sad very sad

You might want to look at some of your own goverment, they seemed to be hooked up pretty good with the corporate world. After 8 years in office, the teachings are pretty clear with the Republicans.

Sorry to Piss on your parade Rainmaker but 42% of Obamas contributions are from small time contributors. The rest would be from a thing called a Lobby. Hope I didn't break your heart.
