Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default The Super Collider is back!

I was pissed 20 years ago when congress pulled the plug on this. Now it looks like one was built and they are ready to fire it up. Can't wait to find out what they find.

Physics definatly isnt my favorite field, but I am definatly intrigued by some of the discoveries and experiments this machine will make possible. As usual, you've got a consensus of some of the greatest mind in the world, and a few crackpots on the fringe going counter to their points to try and get some time in the sun.

Build the thing and let the real experts do their work.

Same here. It would have been a distraction from the boringshuttle "missions." The US super collider was well on its way when the project was cancelled. Now a small country built it.

I remember when I was in college, there was all this talk of particle accelerators being built in TX. It wasn't 17 miles around, but rather large. Never kept up with them. Sounds like funding when down.

I have read a conjecture recently about why we find no evidence of other intelligent life in the universe. Very simply -- and no doubt dropping significant complexities and insights -- the idea is that there may be some unknown trap that all intelligent beings walk into at some predictable stage in their development. Of course, you aren't going to find any sign of intelligent life until some technology milestones are reached -- such as wireless communication, perhaps space travel. Perhaps the natural exploration of the sub-atomic particle physics comprises this unknown trap that all intelligent beings walk into. Maybe all intelligent beings end up, eventually, creating a black hole in their particle accelerators which instantly consume their world? I'm not going to lose sleep about this conjecture, but it is interesting.

While the CERN collider is primarily located in Switzerland (some of it extends accross the border with France) it is actually a collaborative effort on the part ofthe major European countries who have all contributed funding, equipment and scientific personnel for the project.

This project could very well result in Europe regaining the world leadership role in Physicsresearch that Europe held in the early 20th century and then lost to the United States in the 1940s. When the CERN facility becomes operational later this year the major new discoveries in particle physics will be made in Europe instead of the U.S..

if i had to make the call, i say this world is being sucked into a sub atomic black hole when august comes around, but hey, wut do i know...nothin. maybe what we do is shoot this micro black hole at the middle east, with all of the rags and people with tons of bull$h!t floatin round in their heads, maybe the black hole would receive all of the mass it needs to shut itself down! i honestly dont know how blackholes function and i dont wanna find out first hand, but it is definitely worth the risk
