Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default "Socialize the Oil Companies..."

A Democrat lets the cat out of the bag... These lousy Socialists have set their sights far beyond just taking over the U.S. medical industry. They want the oil companies too...

I already brought this up in another thread, but, I thought it was significant enough that it deserved a thread of its own... Her comments were five days ago. I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned it here yet. You guys are slipping...

Here is some followup info that the coincides with the supposed response from Shell's CEO:

http://www.upi.com/International_Security/Energy/Analysis/2008/01/03/analysis_venezuelan_oil_production_down/3540/

Quote:
Oil production was off 5.3 percent in 2007 from the previous year and contributed $3.14 billion to the country's gross domestic product, down from both 2006 and 2005 when the sector accounted for a reported $3.38 billion.
......
Quote:
However, instead of reinvesting that money into the sector, Chavez has opted to spend it on social programs at home and discounted oil for neighboring countries that share his political agenda.
Is there any question where the Dems would spend the profits?

a question (on which i have no preconceived opinion) for my free-marketeer friends on the board: while "socializing" the oil companies is absurd, why not treat/regulate them as a utility?

Because one, no one company has market dominance. Two, go back and read up on the two times the government thought they knew better in the 70's. We got long lines and wasted millions of barrels sitting waiting for gas. There was no gas shortage in the 70's like so many like to refer to it as that.

Yep.
