What a very sad and bizarre end we have to the Jesica Santillan story. Jesica' s second heart and lung transplant seemed to be working, but the damage from the first transplant was already done, and it wasn' t survivable. Jesica died on Saturday afternoon with irreversible brain damage.
Now .. the rest of the story. Jesica, as you no doubt know by now, came to this country illegally. On both of the days that both of her transplant surgeries took place about sixteen people who were in this country legally died because they didn' t get their life-saving transplant in time. That' s 32 law-abiding citizens and residents of the United States who passed away while an illegal alien was receiving two hearts and lungs. (Four lungs? I don' t know if they transplant one or two at a time.) Here' s your kicker. When Jesica passed away there was a chance that the heart and lung she received a few days earlier might have been transplanted into yet another recipient. She also had two kidneys, corneas and other organs that could have been transplanted. The doctors asked her family if they would donate her organs.
Amazingly, they said, " No" .
Can you believe this? This family pays a human-smuggler $5,000 to get into this country. They play on the sympathies of Americans to collect donations sufficient to cover the cost of the first operation. The hospital picks up the cost of the second operation - a cost that will be passed on to the taxpayers and to other patients. They give this girl two hearts and a couple of lungs that could have been transplanted into law-abiding citizens or residents. Then, when the time comes to show some appreciation or some compassion for others who might need a donor organ .. they say, " No" .

Ben, that is one of the most shocking and disgusting things I' ve read on this msg board in a long time. How in the world could the family say no? I' m totally 100% speechless here. I haven' t heard this anywhere else.
Just out of curiousity do you have a link to the story? I' d love to send this to some people.

there is a woman from our small town here who`s husband died a few years ago from needing a kidney transplant. they even had found a match for the transplant in our own town--the person who was a match had two good kidneys and went to be tested for him incase she was a match but then would`nt allow the man to have one of her kidneys. so he died later when she could have helped save his life........................sadest part of all it was his own wife who was the match.
i wonder what goes through her mind now as she sets alone at home with out him.
i would`nt want to live with out my husband. so there would not even be a moments consideration on my part.
I saw that...it disgusted me. These folks are on national TV begging for organs for their daughter, they get them, then they won' t give them to someone else? How pathetic. Throw into the mix that they are, as Ben pointed out, here illegally, and the fact that the doctor passed up someone else on his patient list to give the girl this second set of organs, and you really have a pitiful situation.
I realize that these parents are grieving more than most of us can imagine. I won' t pretend to know what it would be like to lose a child. I imagine it would be the worst thing imaginable. But that gives them no right to act the way they are acting. They are PATHETIC. The sooner they take their sorry butts back where they came from, the better.

You really want to get a picture of how disgusting the situation is? They have LAWYERS and as illegal aliens they will get rich off of this sad scenario for the daughter.
Back in the eighties my dad received two separate kidney transplants (anti-rejection drugs were not as good then) which allowed him to live long enough to see my brother and I graduate from high school, see his first grandchildren born (twin boys), and spend prescious time with us. None of this would have been possible without the selfless generosity of total strangers who themselves had just experienced a tragic loss. To hear that these parents may have denied so many families the opportunity to have those extra years, breaks my heart.

Someone ought to be sued over that first fiasco - I mean blood type? How freakin' basic can you get? As far as them not donating body parts - how lame - It' s okay to beg and plead for someone else to do it for you, but when you have the opportunity to reciprocate, you deny others the very same courtesy someone extended to you? For SHAME!
" 70,000. That' s how many Americans are now waiting for organ transplants. Many will die before a donor match is made."
I wonder how many of the 70k were American children that have died or will die while waiting for (just) one of the several organs that were given to the girl.
I once read that if the person in need is lucky, the average wait for most organs is 1 to 1-1/2 years, but only a low percentage receive the organ(s).
