I wondered what you guys thought of this. I think we could build the wall/fence and still have the jaguars. If enough interest could be generated, we could be hunting jaguars here in 15-20 years. We did it with turkeys, why not jaguars? Down here we have brought back the Florida Panther, Black Bear, and the Alligator. Alligators are the only ones we can hunt now, but the numbers of the panther and bear are rising.
Do you have any ideas how we can have a border fence and a larger jaguar population? It's a little difficult to say exactly what thefence is will do to to them anyway. Cats are pretty resilient as long as they're not being preyed upon by humans.
Frankly, I can't really say I'm sympathetic to the jaguar. National security trumps endangered species, IMHO. They can stay in Mexico for all I care.
Jaguars once had a sustainable population in the SW but were hunted to extinction (or near extinction) by ranchers and others down there. Perhaps, like the wolf in the northwest, there was a reason for this. Perhaps not. Either way, if there is enough support from conservationists (especially in that LOCAL area) they could always transplant as opposed to waiting for some to cross the border. Perhaps they should build the fence with a few places where Jaguars can scale it...maybe they could eat a few illegals along the way

Why the hell would we need or want jaguars here? Much like their cousin the cougar they view us as a food group, for me that alone is enough to say "No thanks, you keep 'em."

I doubt that they will ever build a fence that can consistently keep out an illegal in her third trimester of pregnancy, let alone a highly mobile animal.

One solution - forget the border fence, scatter some landmines. Not the most PC solution, but it could be done cheaply and allow for some reallocation of manpower.

I posted this before, something like this, we do have a few jags in arizona/NM. I'd love to see more and eventually have a huntable population.
I think everyone's forgetting about this fence......that it will only run like 500miles along a 2000mile border etc...?
Also this fence, along with securing the border, apparently is never going to happen, so I really wouldn't worry about that, just figuring out to get more jags here, perhpas reintroduction.....?
there are already cougars in these areas, I see jags only displacing them not really going crazy like the wolves seem to have, ie no wolves before, and now wolves.....though maybe a tad more predation, but I guess you really never know.
Jaguars are in the fossil record here in Louisiana, as are buffalo and elk. I would like to see a huntable population established here, I think they would make a great trophy. I have been close to Jaguars in Central America, too close for my taste, but never actually saw one. They always came around after dark. They make a really weird sound somewhere between a purr and a growl that makes the hair on your arm stand up.
