Default A serious question?

What exactly does a person do with a BA degree in Afro-American Studies? Exactly what is this degree worth?

It's like a History major with all the core classes focusing on African History and Black History in the New World. Mix in a few Afro-centric art classes and I think you have it. Don't ask me what it's good for, I got a bachelor's in History and Archaeology and wound up being a cop.

BT, I uderstand. I grew up with some neighbors who the youngest got a masters in history and all that I can tell he is rebuilding an old house. My parents forbid me to go into anything like a history degree because of no money aka you need to make a living. The money caught my eye right off the bat.

First, I would rather make my way in life with something other than this degree -- electrical engineering, juris doctor, medical doctor -- but notwithstanding I suppose there are some angles that could be played to land a job. I suppose Afro-American studies is a combination of History, Philosophy, Economics, and Anthropology. I would suppose that such a degree would hone one's analysis skills. There are a lot of degrees that do not readily translate into a job title but which still lead to employment. Still . . . I'ld rather my children study something a little more classical and solid in college.

To a lot of companies, a four-year degree is a four-year degree. I've never met an HR manager (in general business, that is) that hasexpected anyone tobe an expert in their undergraduate field of study. To them, it's a piece of paper that shows that you can discipline yourselfenough to complete a long-term project and communicate at least better than the average applicant.

I would imagine that in most cases, ajob candidate with a B.A. in Afro-American Studies would be consideredas prepared as an English,(B.A.) Psychology, or Historymajor.

I'm sticking with Global Affairs. I was originally planning on majoring inProfessional Communication, but it turns out that theGA program at my future school mixes all of that stuffwith a bit of political science, history, and foreign languages. Have to say, I've been somewhat amused by all the impressed looks I get from people, particularly foreigners, when I tell them.
