Unlike gas, food is a true need not a luxury. Those of you calling for government take over of private companies or at least steal their profit and spend it on their choice because evil oil isearning a profit, do you also call for government take over of our grain supply? After all, their profits are way up and a true global crises exist because people are starving. It's only a matter of time when it grows out of control here. Already, SAM's Club is rationing their rice supply to ordinary customer. I have yet to hear big oil limiting folks to 10 gallons a day.

At a time when parts of the world are facing food riots, Big Agriculture is dealing with a different sort of challenge: huge profits.
On Tuesday, grain-processing giant Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. said its fiscal third-quarter profits jumped 42%, including a sevenfold increase in net income in its unit that stores, transports and trades grains such as wheat and corn, as well as soybeans. Monsanto Co., maker of seeds and herbicides, Deere & Co., which builds tractors, combines and sprayers, and fertilizer maker Mosaic Co. all reported similar windfalls in their latest quarters.

Okay, but I want to be in charge when it's over. I just don't have much confidence in most of the people who post in this forum. (No offense intended.)
The Constitution says you have to be 35 to be president, but there's no age restriction if you're going to bequeen.

Absolutely, the job is yours. You canbe Queen Bee if youwant it, however Nancy Polosi or Hillary might want to fight you for it.
Seriously, when does it end? Without profits how are going to get the bestcompetition andattract therisk takers?

RE: We need a government take over right away!
I think a lot of the problem with oil and grains etc.come from commodity speculation and the devalued US dollar. I feel there is some manipulation going on to someone"™s advantage. I don't have a clue as to what would fix or end it though. It seems that when recessionary times come to us it just takes time to cycle through it and then there is a rebound. Things like the cash payment coming tomiddle classpeople won't end anything except extend our debt a little further. The rapid price rise on petroleum products hits the US pretty hard and the resulting increases of food costs coupled with the issue of turning food into fuel further exacerbates the problem and it will impact everyone on the planet. 3rd world countries and low income people here in the states will be hit the hardest.

Already have condemed it there Falcon. I'm also liking McCain a little better. He wants to drop the 51 or 54 cent per gallonsubsidy to the industry and lift the tariff of 51 or 54 cent per gallon on imported ethanol. (Sorry about the two numbers. One amount was the subsidy and the other was the tariff.)

There is a shortage? Have you read any reports in America with long wait lines or "Out of Gas" sign posted? I did see a long line about a week ago I think in philly. They sold gas in I think for $.38/gallonfor an hour. Let government take over just like they did in the late 70's and you will lines and odd/even days return.

on food, how many millions of acres did we pay to NOT have farmed last year ?
Probably just a little under the number of acres we pay to farm.

They already control it.They control the number of acres planted, they subsidize the farmers in bad years, they control the import/export of grains, and with the mandates for ethanol thier now controlling where a large amount of it gets used.Without the governments aid there would be much more tillable acres being farmed every year, and the farmers that couldnt make it would have been weeded out a long time ago.
