Because 1 it's not the oil company's rtesponsibility to come up with and alternative unless it's a money making proposition and 2 nothing is in the pipe line that is a real alternative.

Well perhaps this is directresult of 30+ years of restriction of drilling for new supplies. Perhaps the government needs to save money and eliminate some programs and energy in the process. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath. Have no fear, help could be on the way. I just heard a projection of $10/gallon. At that price I bet the majority will be saying drill. One can only hope.
