what do you all think? I was in the first part of a suicide prevention workshop yesterday and it was noted that lower the age to 18 would project out to be an 8% increase in completed suicides in any state doing so. Alcohol is a main factor contributing to suicide and 7% of all those diagnosed with a substance use disorder completes suicide.
What are the opinions of others?

RE: Lower drinking age from 21 to 18...........
I can remember when it was 18. I was young, but still remember my middle brother getting P.O.ed because they changed the law two years before his 18 b-day

It's a non-issue.Many, if not most states, lowered the minimum age to 18 a few years ago. Traffic deaths in the 18-21 age group shot way up. The feds forced the states to raise it back to 21 by threatening to withhold highway funds.
We should teach kids how to handle alcohol. A kid should be able to have a drink at home or when out with parents so they can learn how to handle it. Kids get access to it on their own and they think the idea is to get puking drunk.
Suicide? We need to show kids that there is more to life than video games and TV. They wind up encountering real-life problems and are crushed when they don't follow a TV like script or allow a replay like a video game.

RE: Lower drinking age from 21 to 18...........
I have seen it both ways here in Vt. New York was 18 and Vermont was 21. Some high school kids used to go to NY or Canada on Friday nights so they could drink in the clubs. Vermont lowered to 18 and the deaths among teens went way up and then back to 21 after the Feds put the highway funds at risk. I would rather see it stay at 21 for everyone. New drivers coupled with inexperianced drinkers isn't the best situation. Sure some will drink early but a 21 law might keep some from starting until later. If all states are at 21 there won't be the border crossing that happened when I was a teen.

Bingo!!! Scotland has some fine beer too.
IMO: If an 18 year old person is old enough to go off to war and die for whatever holy cause is popular this week, then that person is old enough to drinkbeer.

Either the drinking age needs to be moved to 18, or the SS Registration age needs to be moved to 21. There is somethingwrongwith being compelled to register for the draft at a given age, and yet not being able to drink a legal beer.
