Report: Muslim Leaders Want Mecca to Be Center of World Time Zones

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) could be replaced by "Mecca Time," if a group of Muslim leaders get their way.[/b]

At the conference, "Mecca, the Center of the Earth, Theory and Practice," Muslim scientists and clerics called for the change, arguing that the holy city in Saudi Arabia is the center of the Earth and should be the reference point for world time, not Greenwich, England, the British Broadcasting Corp. reports.

One geologist at the Qatar conference said Mecca's longitude is perfectly aligned with magnetic north and should therefore replace the English city, which has been measuring time zones since 1884, the BBC reports.

Attendees of the conference also reviewed the "Mecca Watch," an invention by a French Muslim which reportedly rotates counter-clockwise and displays Mecca's direction from any point in the world, the BBC said.

The conference is part of a trend called "œIjaz al-Koran" or "miraculous nature of the holy text," which tries to find precedents for modern science from passages in the Koran, the BBC reports.

But its critics say Ijaz al-Koran confuses spiritual truth "” which depends on constant faith "” with empirical truth, which depends on ever-changing science, the BBC said.

They are free to designate their time zones any way they want to. Heck, the Chinese mark their new year in mid-February, don't they? Don't some cultures designate the year as being something other than 2008 Anno Domini as we do? Let them do as they please. Just don't ask us to change our local time/date conventions.

F-em and feedem fish heads. I dont see the world bending over and changing the time zone we all go by, to appease them. Id like to change to Burnie time. That would be a calander with two extra days added. Days that could not be used for work. We could slip one in between Sun. and Mon. and one between Fri. and Sat. To heck with the years, we will just flow as we go.

That would be true if Mecca were sorrounded by hundreds of miles of molten iron and nickel in every direction, but its not.

we could do Mecca Time. But i suspect to make it work, we'd have to set our watches back about 800 years or so.

whether you place it wherever......time is time......high noon is high noon, so really this is like lets change nothing but somethign on paper....

and oh btw, time doesn't exist.....

I think it was during nazi times.....germany started over with year 0 or 1......so no 1900AD, or BC.....that didnt workout too well apparently.
