Default Underage Drinking?

I just heard the statement on TV that 50% of all alcohol in the U.S. is consumed by minors. I think that's ridiculous. I know that some kids drink on occasion, but it's hard to get and hard to conceal from parents. But they're trying to show that it's some sort of plague. I don't believe it.

What kinds of experiences have youpeople had with this? Opinions?

I have a hard time believing that stat. However, it's college students who make up the biggest number of underage drinkers. Lower the age to 14 and it would correct that stat.

Why is it a growing problem? I personally don't believe there should be the arbitrary drinking age. It's a law I don't believe in nor obeyed.

To be honest with you, I can believe that stat. Who does the most partying and hardcore bar running in this country? its high school and college kids. Older people with responsibilities, jobs, and familiescant afford the costs of such behavior, and thusdon't care to make a point to get drunk on a weekly basis. Ain't the same for students.

Personally, I don't find the statistic all that alarming, I just think its something young people do in this country. Most grow out of it.

So then you agree it's an arbitrary stat then. A little over 20 years ago, the Fed through extortion forced states to change this age from 18 to 21. Had they not done this, this stat would hold no water.

I agree with you there, if the age was 18 you would have less 'underage' drinking. I don't however think you would see a net loss of drinking in the 18-21 age group. Just something about that time of life drives people to party and drink; and I don't think its really a problem for most. 99.9% grow out of it and become honest, hardworking citizens. You've got that .1% who couldn't handle it, and went over the 'edge' just like everything in life. You can never make life completly safe for the .1%ers no matter how much litigation and legislation you pass.

didn't one state lower its drinking age to 21 or something a few years ago, and the rate of accidents and stuff in this age bracket went up? hoWvEr, the accidents were not by kids in the state, but kids from out of state trying to drive to the state where they could legally drink and then drive home.

i heard something about a bill that would allow men in service under 21 to drink in bars......

if they let one 18year old drink they have to let all the others imo

i think the law is fine the way it is. underagers drink there share of alch....regaurdless of the age limit. Most 18 year olds dont act right/or can handle 6 beers(mentally) so they need to stay at home in private when they drink.
you can do what you want in your house, the age limit isnt enforced unless you cause trouble....then you get what you had coming to you.

ive drank since i was 19....i have one posession by consumption ticket, because of a noise complaintin theapartment. really we were bieng quiet....the neighbor didnt like the fact that we drank underage.she seen us come in withthe Beer.

....i didnt mess with alchmuch inhighschool. because all the kids were idiots when they drank.

and there are tons of 14-16 year olds that drink on a weekely basis...wich i dont agree with....18 would be ok with me as long as they arent in Public. an 18 year old should be able to go to the store buy a 6pack and drink it at home.

but the 21 limit is fine tooIMO...

It seems there are some very strong attitudes on this subject. Obviously, being underage, I can't drink in a public place. But I have had people go ballistic here and especially in chat at the idea that I might be having a drink at home with my husband. Then there are people who think it's wrong to drink no matter your age.
