Is anyoen familiar with the New Urbanism idea? Obviously it goes much deeper, but I think the main idea is reducing ubran sprawl (correct me if I'm wrong). It was briefly introduced in one my classes today, anyone have any thoughts?
More people crowded into one place, more crime, more discontent.
I live 35 miles from the local urban cesspool, and that is way too close for my comfort.
We have 'sustainable development' in my state. I'm sure if its a federally or state mandated program. It entails reducing land usage, making it difficult for people to build anything outside of the barriers of a town or city. The idea is to herd people into cities vs allowing them to have the type of dwelling that they would prefer.
Humans aren't meant to live in hives, though a good portion of them have and believe in a hive mentality.

I'm all for reducing urban sprawl. With encroachment from city slickers, our rural lands are become more and more endangered. Nothing puts a frown on my face faster than watching a farm or ranch subdivided. Once that happens, it never goes back. And some day we are going to need the food that land could produce.

Just do a fly over of some major cities. Look at the lay out and study the growth. You still today should be able to make 500K on a house if you buy in the right area and flip it after 5 years.

If I were into real estate speculation, I'd buy into the areas surrounding Aberdeen, MD. There are still a number of struggling farms in Harford County, and a lot of residential and commercial growth potential as the military base realignment gets into full swing over the next five or so years.
Our city has been pushing this idea for the last couple of years. Perhaps it maybe a good idea for those working in the city's urban core but I don't believe that it is necessarily the best place to raise a young family. Yes it is convienient for those that work in the core but personally I prefer some grass and trees. Developpers have revitalized a number of downtown wharehouse/office buildings into some beautiful condo units but with prices of these units exceeding $400 K they really are not affordable for the young family or individual that is just starting out in the working world. Subberbian is alive and well in our city. I know that we don't have the "space" concerns of many large American cities so the push to the "new urbanism" is not really catching hold here. There has been the creation of many satalite communities on the outskirts of our city where it still is possible be obtain 1-2 acre lots that are serviced and with a 2000 sq. ft. home still can be bought for under $300 k.I don't understand why some one would buy a concrete box over having the large yard and space to raise their family. Our provicein area is a little larger than Texas yetour total population isjust over 900,000.Therefore loosing the land around our city for these satalite communities is not a concern. In an hour and a half drive north of our city you can be hunting on thousands of undeveloped acres where youmay not see another hunter the entire season.
actually, a lot of new urbanism ideas are aimed at suburban-type development. The ida is to have a substantial mix of all zoning classifications mixed into what would formerly have been a single classification. thus, in what might have formerly been one large sprawling housing tract, new urbanism would have a mix of houses, schools, commercial space, parkland/walking trails, offices, etc. the goal is in part to reduce urban sprawl, and in part to reduce car usage and highway congestion. make your subdivisions walkable. some of the models i've seen can be extremely upscale.
