This is pretty much what the video said. Thanks Ipsc

There is an urgent need for firefighters in the West to battle about two dozen major wildfires.
TheDenverChannel.com reports many of the new recruits are Hispanics who speak only Spanish. That means that some of the supervisors who speak only English are being laid off or demoted. In Oregon, a crew boss is required to be able to speak the language of the firefighters "” even if it's only one worker on a 20-person crew. The state says the rule is necessary for safety reasons.
So why not require the workers to speak English? The state has no clear answer.

That blurb leaves more questions than answers. First, there's a difference between speaking Spanish and being an illegal alien. Second, yes, supervisors need to be able to communicate with their men, particularly in fire/rescue operations. And last, perhaps this is just a reflection of the times. Like it or not, there are millions of Hispanics here, both legal and illegal. You can't stamp out their culture just because they're on this side of the border. We all have to deal with it one way or another.
I still don't understand why Americans are so resistant to take up second and third languages. Is it arrogance, stupidity, or something else altogether?
How about simple parity? What do you think the Mexican government would say if I moved down there, enrolled my kid in one of their schools, and demanded that they hire English-speaking teachers, that all government forms be printed in both their native Spanish, and in English to accomodate me, etc. etc. etc.?
Why do you bring up "illegals"? It's not mentioned in the article, or in any of the posts in this thread. It is patently ridiculous to lay off someone who has worked his way up to a supervisory level in order to accomodate entry level workers who don't want to bother with learning the predominant language in this country. If there's a safety concern, then, put all the spanish speaking workers on a single crew with a spanish speaking supervisor. Or, as suggested in the blurb... Dictate that the ability to understand English is a job requirement.

Again, this isn't about illegals and what they want. It's about free communicationin a very dangerous line of work, one that concerns the public safety. No one is demanding that firefighters rescue Hispanics first.
Not to mention that this isn't Mexico. You can't get anything done south of the border because the government is not only corrupt, but downright criminal. We have higher standards here, and sometimes that means tolerance and respect.

I brought it up because that's one of the first questions asked on that firefighting forum. And like I said, a supervisor who can't communcate with his workers can't do his job. I've never seen a fire department that had a Spanish-speaking crew on one side and an English-speaking crew on the other. If there are no qualified English-speaking job applicants, then what should we do? There's a shortage of firefighters in many parts of the country. We have to deal with it.

I AGREE, so ALL FIREFIGHTERS getting paid with government monies should be REQUIRED TO SPEAK FLUENT ENGLISH!!! So should the firefighter be required to give a command 2 times, once in English, and the second time in Spanish??? I'm pretty sure you obviously have very little experience in the matter, and your opinion seems to come straight from an ACLU-America DESTROYED Handbook.
I DISAGREE very strongly with this. They chose to come here, they need to speak the language. A Firefighter incapable of communicating with the rest of his crew is a LIABILITY to the rest of the crew. Learn ENGLISH, or go work somewhere where your communications skills will get you by. It's not about STAMPING out there culture, it's about making them learn the LANGUAGE of this country. And at this rate, we are punishing AMERICANS for not being able to speak a FOREIGN language and rewarding those who do speak a foreign language???
And THIS is an oxy-moron in itself. SPEAKING ENGLISH should be one of the REQUIREMENTS for being QUALIFIED!!!
Aught Six,
You need to pull your head out of there!!!!!
Hopefully these firefighters will have the support of their UNION and the IAFF!!!! If not, this is just another example of the degradation of our society.
