Tornado slams Atlanta

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/14/storm.atlanta/index.html

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta on Friday night, rippling the roof of the Georgia Dome during a college basketball game, shattering windows and ripping roofs from buildings before tearing into several residential neighborhoods.

Gosh, CB, looks like spring weather is the blame. We pick up tornado season here during warm April days. Come April 1st, I put my house papers in the basement!

Checking out the first article, it talks about city tornadoes being rare. I once asked daddy biscuit, who was a weatherman, why tornadoes usually hit the countryside and not the city. He said, "It's just because there is more country!"

I heard about that on the news today, Im thankful that we do not get such adverse weather here. Are they common in all of the South/Midwest? I'd hate to live somewhere that gets them frequently because my house would be distroyed and all my treasured belongings gone forever.

The weather can get pretty severe in some places. The tornado season is a little early this year.

You can keep tabs on it all by check the Weather Channel website.

I've lived in NW Florida since '94 and haven't seen one yet. They hit sometimes up around the Alabama line, but not down here on the water. Of course, we do get Hurricanes. But you see them coming days in advance, and if they are big enough (Category 4 or 5) you skedaddle to somewhere safe. My sister lives up in Alabama and we just cruise up there for a couple of days.

I couldn't be bothered with all that uneccessary hassle of rebuilding a house from stratch. I'd rather live somewhere hurricane free and with very little chance of a tornado.

Well, we have lived in the same house, 2 miles off the Gulf of mexico since 1994. Haven't had to rebuild, but did lose a couple of shingles in Hurricane Opal, back in '95. No losses since then. Hurricane Ivan did break off an oak tree limb and smashed my BBQ, so I was bent out of shape about that, but State Farm bought me another.

Sounds like normal spring weather( even with minor deviations of early/ late seasons etc)

( just as warming /cooling- global climate change is normal- just less frequent)

Tornados happen every yr . Some places more then others. Theres places noted for them - like tornado alley etc.But they can deviate from there "normal patterns" areas, seasonsetc.

Houses etc can be replaced- the very lucky ones walk away with there lifes- after a big one rips threw theretowns or naborhoods leveling it.

My son & his family live in Ky now- a few have hit nearby since they lived there- previous to that some big ones went threw the area causing a bit of damage& lose of life.

We had our lil house in the south(secret location)get hit by a big gust of wind - it was not a tornado offically - it was not seen or did it have circlular traveling winds it seems or was it wide spead or large. But it still riped down a few trees nearby& a moble home got smashed flat- half our roof got peeled back( the inside damaged &f looded with theheavy downpours of rainwater, brand new antenii got riped off the roof/brokeand tree in the yardbroke in half etc.The state? would have helped with a few dollars for damages etci guess- if the winds had been circlular- but they wernt so they didnt- if it went in a circle or not- did not change one bit what damages where done of course.

A"large" down draft? hit colorado a few yrs back- no one close by- it leveled about 10,000+ acres of trees tho if i remember right. One in wy not as big & others...But if its not a circle/wind its not a tornado.

And as the other poster pointed out- theres more country side then city these various winds hit.

My son i mentioned lives in this area to- noted for past quakes.

The infamous series of three New Madrid quakes in 1811-1812 occurred a few weeks apart, from Dec. 16 to Feb. 7. They measured 8.1, 8.0 and 7.8 and represent three of the four strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the lower 48.
"Strong earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone are certain to occur in the future," states a USGS fact sheet. "There is a 9-in-10 chance of a magnitude 6 to 7 temblor occurring in the New Madrid Seismic Zone within the next 50 years."

Differences in geology east of the Rockies account for the widespread effects, geologists say.

I've been ordering travel brochures on various states and Montana, Idaho, Arizona, Oklahoma and North Carolina all look lovely especially Oklahoma. Do they get really bad weather there?

Oklahoma certainly gets thier fair share of severe weather, including tornados. Montana and Idaho would be pretty safe places, if ya can put up with the cold winters.
AZ. is just too dang hot and dry for me, but some seem to love it.
