Default Airbus will build the new US Air Force Tanker

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-fi-tanker1mar01,1,7754266.story

This is fantastic news[:'(], particularly as a person with alot of family that works in a Mil-Aero connector plant that is currently laying off for a lack of work.

Rather than spend the 40billion, and potentially 100billion of taxpayer money here in the US (Boeing), creating US jobs and generating major trickle down throughout the US aerospace industry, which is hurting right now, we're sendingour money and jobsto France.

Personally I'm mad as hell, but whats your take?

It would be different if we got something worthwhile in return. All we get from the French is contempt.

Will the next big military contract go to China?

I read the entire article which had a lot more information on the 2nd page. While I would like to see the contract work done completely by Americans, I can also understand why northrop won the contract. Boeing bid with a plane that has less capacity across the board and obviously didn't pay attention to the requested specs and goals of the Air Force. It's sad because Boeing is capable of doing better but apparently chose not to do so.

thats a real shame about boeing and all the jobs going to France, I'd rather work in the US but from a dispatchers point of view working with the damn things every day i'd say airbus are by far advanced.

I'm sure they (China) could build us some fine warships, and look how much cheaper the labor would be.[:'(]
This one affects me personally, since I work for a construction subcontractor at the Everett 747677787 assembly facility. We are the ones who build in the utilitiesinto the tooling (small and large) which are used in the assembly of all of these aircraft.
I have seen KC 767's being built for ***an roll out the door. They are already being built. There is no assembly facility to build, there were to be just a few changes to the existing one.
There could be more to this than is obvious. Being on the "left" coast with 2 liberal female senatresses and one liberalgoverness that are constantly Thorns in the side of military, and environmental issues (such as we NEED more refining capacity and to get going on responsibly for oil in the ANWR....... Maybe thier chickens have come home to roost.
The bad thing about this is our dollar, and trade deficit will take a BIGGER hit now

Yep, if American companies can't make quailty/competitive products then oh well, I'm sure Boeing would have been picked if they had all the required specs...

US based Aerospace is most certainly dieing...

I hope if we ever find ourselves in a war with a country (or an ally thereof) that we are outsourcing our jobs and technology to, they are kind enough to keep sending us supplies forsaid war. I trust they wont turnsaid productsagainstus, andthey certainly wouldent cut us off from parts, like we did for those f-15's we sold Iran, that would just be bad business.

Globalizing United States Defense Technology has wonderful longterm possibilites anyway you cut it.

Don't just limit it to Aerospace. Fact is our whole core of engineering and science is dieing because of our poor education system and society culture. We need some serious correcting internally in orderto meet the competitioncomming from the rest ofthe world.
