I read in this morning's
Oregonian that almost 4,000 US servicemen and women have given their lives for the effort in Iraq, over the past 4 years. That's roughly 1,000 people per year. Estimates state that another 40-50,000 have had serious injuries...
In contrast, 42,000+ people died on American roads in 2006 (2007 statistics will not be available until mid-summer 2008)---and that's below the national annual average. In addition, over 2.5 million have been injuried. Here's the quick link...

So what is happening on our highways, and why don't we ever hear candidates talk about improving our infrastructure and broken systems to better American lives on our soil?
