The insurgents who seized the post were said to be followers of Baitullah Mehsud, an Islamic hard-liner who since December has been sole leader of an umbrella group of Taliban sympathizers and who is also thought to have links to al-Qaida.

Yes, they need a stable base of operations full of sympathizers. The Taliban were around before al Qaeda, in Pakistan. They couldn't win at home, so they went next door instead. Now that they've been ejected, they want their home turf back, and they see that the time is right. They're short on money and manpower, but they can still kill a lot of people across the country. They have their chance, and we have ours.

What do you propose to do about it? Musharaff very recently warned the US to keep it's troops out of Pakistan. Musharaff went so far as to say that the Pakistani army would go after any foreign troops operating in his country:

It is a sad fact that they will crop up wherever there isn't any pressure. We booted them out of Afghanistan and as soon as we put our efforts into Iraq they started to form back up. We can't get to Pakistan so now they are there. They are like a cancer on democracy. I feel the only way they can be eliminated is by action from the Middle East themselves and that doesn't appear likely.
