There is, on another thread, a discussion as to whether Barack Obama is a Jamaican-American or an African-American. Of course, most people agree that he's black.
I'm of ***anese descent, 100%, so is my mom. She was born in California and I was born in Michigan. We are considered to be Asian-Americans. My husband is of European descent, 100%, and he is considered to be just a plain old American.
My daughter is only half ***anese descent, but shewill beconsidered to be Asian-American.
Barack Obama's father was 100% African as I understand, and his mother was 100% white American. But Obama is considered as black, i.e., African-American.
Can someone explain to me how this is calculated?

I would be interested in knowing what Barrak Obamahe considers himself to be. The Feds came up with a set of rules a few years back enhancing minority definitions. Such as African-American, Biracial, Latino, Islander etc. It is a bigger deal in federally funded programs (eg, child welfare,) where determining racial status helps pull drawdown funds. In my active duty years, some troops took real exception to biracial soldiers. Like they had no racial home. Epithets and violence were not all that unusual. We had annual racial equality briefings and for good reason. We had race related killings and beatings.
Hmm. I was stationed in ***an. I really grew to enjoy the culture. I lost track of my friends there, which is sad. Wish it was not so far away.

Don't know any indigenous peoples populating the western hemisphere to be black. Not one population.
All black populations are transplanted Africans brought to the New World as slave labor. So, in this racist world we live in, Barak Hussein Obama is not known as an American. He is an African-American, even though Africa is not a country and the classification is purely racial, as is Asian American (are not Indian people Asian-Americans also ? They come from the same continent as the Russians, and are completely qualified to call themselves asian-Americans but they're not supposed to because they're not what people think of racially. Makes me puke....) and as such is a liberal term because it is divisive and serves no purpose other than to isolate people from a common sense of 'nation' and 'national identity' providing cohesion as a SINGLE people.
My family is European in lineage and there are those who'd call us White and others who would not. I couild not care less. I'm American and do not play hyphenated games.
If you live in this country and especially if you're serving in the U.S. military and fighting for our country, you have earned the right to and should call yourself AMERICAN.

and if you're a CITIZEN...yes....then I agree with you. I remember in NYC that disgusting little liberal troll Mayor David Dinkins divided the city by referring to it as 'A Gorgeous Mosaic'. That's pretty divisive, because a mosaic is made up of hundreds of small, separate, distinct and different pieces. That's as divisive as it gets. Anyone who refers to himself as xxxx-American is seen as 'less' in my eyes becuase they put an unimportant and possibly conflicting allegiance before being an American. To hell with them; they divide us and make us weaker, not stronger. They are no friends, allies or countrymen, IMO.

RE: Question, Help me out, Please
first you need to define how to categorize people.
if skin color is what defines your ethnicity, or ir truly where you come from does
if its skin color, then you're ignorant and a moron and you can't be reasoned with
if its truly ethnicity, then be colorblind and call things the way they are
this woman is 100% African American
this man is Cuban American
this man is
Mother: 1/2 Thai, 1/4 Caucasian, 1/4 Chinese
Father: 1/2 Black, 1/4 American Indian, 1/4 Chinese
Add it all up and you will see that Woods is actually 1/2 Asian, 1/4 Black, and 1/4 other.
They are all 3 Americans. First and formost they ARE Americans. Second they each have different ethnical makeups. Third their skin colors are different.
If you see Tiger and Colin as "black" you're using your racist glasses again, because thats just categorizing them on skin color alone.
No, actually they are all AMERICANS. They may choose to call themself something different although I don't think those 3 individuals do but they are still Americans, one of whom served this country in the military.
