What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
I watched this one movie that came out, National Treasure II, and I liked it ok, it was full of action, blah, blah , blah.
There was this one scene that has Nicholas Cage saying, "Before Lincoln, they used to say 'United States are', but after him, it was 'United States is', he made it one nation."
I was honestly troubled by this, because we're really turning from being a republic, into a democracy, and I really don't like it one bit, after the Civil War, the state's rights issue was never again brought up, no laws changed what the constitution says, it was just that after the Reconstruction, everyone forgot about states rights, and states never used their rights again.
The federal government is trying to take over every aspect of the American lifestyle, they're trying to launch healthcare programs, instead of giving that money to states, who have a better understanding on what issues are present in their borders, the Feds just try to solve it themselves.
Let's face it people, the needs in Tennessee aren't the same as the needs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or the needs in Texas the same as the ones in Montana, I think it's time, the Federal government stopped pretending, that they know everything, and allow this nation to go back to being united STATES, so that people's needs can better be met, and let the Senators be elected by the state government, not the people,so that they can be represented in the Federal Government, and have their say, instead of the Senate being just another House of Representatives.
This way, it'll be the way our Founding Fathers wanted it, and it'll work best, perhaps then, we'll see interstate commerce, so that the states can have revenue, then we might not need state taxes, and then, with plenty of money for their own spending, the states can solve their own issues, like healthcare, and the border issue.....let the states have their own state militias, well-regulated, if the Federal Government only wants to send their National Guardsmen to jail, and let drug dealers who got shot in the butt sue the government for 10 million dollars, in this way, we could fix the issue.
Why not let Texas take care of it's own border issue, and Arizona? They know what strategically needs to be done, while Capitol Hill and presidential candidates are thinking about driver's liscences for immigrants that are illegal, instead of thinking about keeping them out, so we don't have to spend millions of dollars on getting them liscence papers and driver's tests in Spanish, in the first place!!!!!
It's just stupid, I'm sick, and tired of how ignorant, the Federal Government is trying to keep the American people, of what SHOULD be going on in this country, instead of what they THINK should be going on.
The Federal government isn't teaching our kids our own nation's history, so they can't see what America was, and how it was founded, instead, we're making them watch, "An Inconvenient Truth", and telling them how to have sex and passing out condoms, but not teaching them how to spell.
Folks, it's just stupid, and the government is just controlling us, can we just talk about this, and find out how to tell those politicians, that we want America, 50, sovereign states, notone, secular, socialist state.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
Yeah, things have gotten a little out of hand in Washington, but it's not the end of the country. You're right about the growth of the federal government. I think the best thing we can do is try to ensure that the Electoral College remains intact, and that we elect presidents who will put Constitutionalists on the Supreme Court. I think it's generally good to keep the White House and the Congress at odds with opposing parties in each, but that can difficult to orchestrate. People's moods change with the times. We just have to avoid complacency.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
Both you guys make great points and I agree with the subject matter of the post. The Feds have gotten way out of control, they exceed their mandate, and the American People are generally being herded towards a socialist mentality. The idea of a huge federal beaurocracy is truly socialist, and that idea is being pushed by liberals, democrats (the same ?), and the media which no longer appears to be objective in reporting anything but rather more interested in indoctrinating people into their own political and social beliefs.
There are ways to deal with this. First is to ensure we vote for those who will appoint strict constitutionalists to the Supreme Court. Second is to vote against all those who support big government, huge social programs funded by taxation, and revisionist judges. Our votes can restore a pre-reconstruction USA but with the current 'team' mentality of DEMS vs REPUBS across all walks of life, and with the idea that one cannot vote his conscience but rather must vote the party, this will not happen.
A long time ago, in the City University of New York, I was taught the only way to effect change is thru revolution. I have come to believe that, and I have come to believe that large-scale change cannot be affected in any other way....pity....status-quo will destroy us.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
I don't know if it's actually over, yet, I don't know that there must be a revolution to fix this major problem in America.
Perhaps if a movement could occur that would spread awareness, it'd be big like a "John Doe Movement", if you will.
Except that that sort of thing, well, it's tough to start, and it's got to be convincing, and be much more widespread than personal conversations over lunch witha guy who's your friend, and you both agree with each other on all politics, vote the same, whatever.
It'd be tough, but I know it could happen, we can pray that someone with their head put on their shoulders stands up to the challenge. He'd have to be like Teddy Roosevelt, and that's a LOT to live up to. I don't reckon I ever read 5 books a week in my life.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
You are still a sovereign citizen living in a sovereign state in a democratic republic. No one has taken those rights away. Most people would rather give them away than use them. The federal government has no power to force anything on any state, so long as the basics rights of the citizens are not infringed. Feds do have the power to determine how much federal funding a state gets, which is where the problem starts. Local politicians don't want to tax their constituents, so they go to the state to fund their pet projects that keep them in office. State politicians don't want to get voted out either, so they appeal to the feds for money to fuel their pet projects. Representatives at the national level engage in mutual back-scratching to fund their pet projects. Since they pay the more and more of the bills for state and local government, the feds influence grows stronger over time.
The problem boils down to this; we vote for the wrong people, for the wrong reasons. Politicians act the way they do because we have trained them to act that way. They won't stop until we do.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
If we really want the states to be able to take care of stuff rather than the Federal Government we first have to get people in the Federal Government who will cut the taxes and programs that come from those taxes. Now, people don't want to give their states a lot of money to take care of things because the federal government is raping them. The states don't have the money right now to take on the problems that we would rather them handle than the feds because the feds won't give it up. Until we start electing officials that don't think they have the answer to everything, then there's little hope to get any state soverignty back. Now, all we hear about is "elect me and this is what I'll do for you," it'd be nice to hear "elect me and I'll won't butt into everything you want to do."
Merry Christmas everyone, been runnin around the past couple days and haven't got much comp. time. Hope everyone has a blessed holiday.

If men are going to fight and die for a futileuprising against the feds, you could at least name it the "John Buck Movement". That would be kind of a cool, actually.
I think revolution is a dangerous word. Not because of actual revolution, but because of the types of people who throw it around. Awareness is much better. I think the main problem at this point is the legislative status quo in Congress. For every major bill that passes, there are numerous pork and entitlement bills that also go to the White House. Let's see, how many vetoes has Bush used so far?
Cut off the head and the body will die. That means curbing the rampant pork spending and stopping the expansion offrivolous and wastefulfederal agencies and programs. We have to clean up Congress. We can start by dumping the good ol' boy incumbents who continue to perpetuate the ever-increasing federal budget. Pressuring the whole bunch to do something about spending is also important. I think that if candidates want to push their special interest programs, they should give something back by cutting spending elsewhere.
If you want to do something about it, why not start up an email campaign? You really only have to write one email. It doesn't take long to make its way around the country, particularly with sites like this. Think about what you want to see and share your ideas. I think just about everyone in America is fed up with politicians right now. Change could be just aclick away.
RE: What ever happened to Sovereign, Independent States?
Just some things to add to the discussions. Some events in history which have probably increased the strength of the federal government with respect to the state government include (1) the anti-trust/anti-monopoly government legislation, such as the Sherman anti-trust act in early 20th century, (2) the federal regulations on food and drugs enacted in the early 20th century, (3) the new deal of FDR in the 1930s, (4) WW-II, (5) the Cold War.
