CLEVELAND - A contractor who helped discover bundles of Depression-era U.S. currency totaling $182,000 hidden behind bathroom walls said the homeowner should turn the money over to him or at least share it.

How about no, you greedy @#$%&@$...

[/align]I don't understand the nerve of people who find someone else's property and want to keep a huge chunk of it for themselves. The homeowner offered 10%, which is a fairly standard finder's fee, but this guy wants 40%. If there is any justice in Ohio, not only with this clown lose in court and walk away with nothing, but his contracting business will tank as well.

RE: Contractor Wants To Keep Money He Found In Client's House
I would defer to North Texan on this, but i think that in terms of both laws and tradition, something like that belongs to the property owner.
I recall a while back that a couple of guys claimed to have dug up a bunch of old money in their backyard while planting a tree. It turns out that was a cover story because they had found the money in someone else's house that they had been working on. I think that all that money went back to the owner.

Agreed. But the courts are headed by judges which are often former attorneys...and they practice CYA big time. They'll hear a case rather than risk having a decision not to hear it come back and haunt them. At least that's what I've seen.
If this actually was taken to court, as the homeowner, I'd withdraw my offer of a 10% finders fee.

The contractor gets paid for the work he did...period. Themoney was found on private property andbelongs to the homeowner. This guy must have the morals of a polecat.

He should have taken the 10% and been very happy about it. I would have been.

What if he found a purse in their closet? Ridiculous! While I understand the owners didn't know it was there, whoever renovated the room would have found it, and it belongs to the owner. Hey, I found oil on your property, so I get to share in the proceeds of the sale!
