Default Special ed is ruining our educational system.

Alright fine people, I"m going to unload. As most of you already know, I"m a teacher in a high school. Today in my 2nd period class, I had a kid refuse to do work, pay attention, and got up and just walked out the door. All of this was unprovoked by me. I catch him, just outside the door and ask what he is doing. He then comes towards me and starts cussing me a blue streak. Calls me everything but a human and rambles off a string of explicit that I couldn"t have even come up with myself. The whole time the rest of the class is watching, so I stop him, and start to escort him to the office. He brakes lose and runs out the door, leaving school. I fill out a report about the situation, believing something would be done. Just now, I"m told he will be back in my room with no punishment. They are going to let him stay home for the rest of the day to cool down. Needless to say, I get hot. I question the whole handling of the situation. I was told, the kid is A.D.D. so he is considered handicapped so he cannot be punished. I"ve done some research on this kid and found out he has used this for years. When he wants to go home, he cusses a teacher and gets time off to cool down. Needless to say, I"m finding a new line of work. I"m so pissed off at this liberal, dump on teachers first mentality of education. I"m just speechless.

Just think, your kids will be nailed for doing any of this. Add that to the lack of education your child is getting because teachers are having to teach down to special ed kids being mainstreamed, as well the disruption due to A.D.D. and E.D. kids mixed in. Before im labled as not sensitive. Ive done this job for 15+ years, I have yet to find a reason to mainstream a kid. If a kid can not handle the material of the subject, what good does it to to teach above their heads? Why not get them in vocational education, and out of the way of all the "normal" kids. As it stands, the special ed kids are the first priority because that is what will get a teacher hammered. The system doesn"t give a damn about your child. When did all this get so screwed up. Besides, what does a special ed kid get out of being in a class they can not understand, feed watered down material lacking any substance. They get babied through out school, then get in a real world that they have no skills for. This kid im speaking of can not read, write, or do basic math, yet they put him in my chemistry class. Why not teach this kid to read, write, or do math????? Am I just simply a brain dead idiot, or does this make no sense what so ever.? Arrrgggggggg[:@][:@][:@][:@]

Stop it. You're making too much sense. That's not sensitive.

Too bad, I have worked for quit a few kids with ADD and your case sounds like more than just ADD.
I do not blame you for getting upset, as the kid should have gotten some in-school suspension.

Oh no. Its not his fault, as it was explained to me. That even came from T.E.A. (texas educational Agency). I read it on there web site. A child can no be punished if they have a handy capping condition. ADD is listed as a handycapping disorder. I guess this kid can get out of jail with this card as well, because he is being taught he will not be held accountable for any of his actions. Hell, I was ADD growing up and dyslexic. I out grew the ADD but still deal with the dyslexia. I learned how to behave myself.

I too grew up with ADHD and dyslexia and have learned to behave and control myself without the aid of medicine. I don't understand why these kids would want to use it as an excuse. I was very embarrassed of it when I was in middle school and high school. But I never EVER used it as an excuse to have more time for test (Ex: TAAS Test) or for behavioral problems.

BTW, thank God for spell check

Exactly. I was embarrassed and refused to let anyone know. And ill second your motion, Thank God for spell check. It came just in time for me. When I started college, the basic word processors just came out. Tech had them in the basement of the library. I took full advantage.

If I had gone throught the special ed system of today, Id be praying to keep my job at McDonalds instead of running a science dept..

ADD just means you need to whip them a little harder to get their attention.[:@]
I had some sort of hyperactivity and ADD when i was younger, hell maybe i still do. But, when my dad started unbuckling his belt or threatening to not let me go hunting, i started focusing really well.

Where I live they don't get free reign. My girlfriend and her two kids live with me. One is mildly autistic, the other is showing signs of ADD, anxiety and some other things. Not bad enough that they will medicate him though, he just sees a psychologist.

I know other kids that have ADD as well. If they get out of line they do get punished, as well as our autistic kid (he is great though). They cut him a little slack, like he can leave the classroom when ever wants and go to a different room. I don't know of any time he has done it though in the past two year. But if any of them act up they get suspensions and letters sent home.

In my opinion having ADD is not an excuse for acting like a brat. When I grew up there was no ADD, there was a paddle in the principles office!
