Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Plans Emerge For Long-term U.S. Presence In Iraq

Iraqis may offer US deal to stay longer

***

There really was never much alternative to this. I'm glad it's getting to the point where the Iraqi government can actually govern instead of just running for cover. A strong American presence in the Middle East serves the interests of many nations, most importantly ours.

What a wonderful deal:For the lazyIraqi government , that is. US troops will continue to die while the Iraqiarmy wusses off.It ain't going to happen folks. The vast majority of US citizens want the troops home and that is going to happen. If the next president does not do it, that person will last only one term.

In the Middle East, might makes right. The further our military forces are, the less influence we have over the region.

Thought the artical doesnt come right out and say it I get the impression that many folks who said this whole war was about oil werent far off the mark in thier assesment.Correct me if I got the wrong impression but it looks like the plan is to get UN forces out, get the mandates lifted, then Iraq can buy us off with oil in return for us keeping a presence there and giving us a staging point to attack Iran from.So did I miss anything?

Sounds about right. Except I've always hated that "war for oil" mantra. I think of it as a war to keep terrorists away from our oil.

"In the Middle East, might makes right. The further our military forces are, the less influence we have over the region."

Any US troops in the middle eastare onlya lightning rod for every terrorist in the middle east. The US will never have any positive influence on the region so long as our government continues to supportIsrael to the hilt. Furthermore, with Putin rattling nukes; the US will have to ramp up our force in Europe. We ain't got the troops to pay world cop.

"I think of it as a war to keep terrorists away from our oil."

First, it ain't "our oil." It is "their" oil. Ths US continues to kiss the butt of middle eastdictators while they overtly support terror against the US. Case in point-Saudi: The US was attacked by Saudis commanded by a Saudi and supported by the Saudi government.

It is our oil, we took it. We have a good bit invested in invading that country, so I have no problem recouping some of our sunk costs. If you want the Iraqis to govern themselves, then start taking their oil without paying until they can function. This whole thing would be over before the election.

You just don't get it. We're the biggest foreign investor in Middle Eastern oil. China and India are buying it up in quantity now, but American dollars drive the global oil market. Let the terrorists come to us. If we have to chase them down from Washington, we'll never get anything done with noticeable efficacy. They will continue to try to kill us and ruin our economy until they they die or we die. They are much more patient and reckless than we.

You're just going to have to look at reality. For at least the next few generations, we'll continue to support Israel, tolerate Saudi kings, and depend on oil to drive our economy for the next few generations. If we relinquish our influence and control on any part of the entire geopolitical system, we lose. The choices are clear.
