Looks like you won't be seeing me out there any time soon. It sucks, but they have every right to do it, and I doubt they will stop until the price cuts into demand. Indian reservations are another option, and they set their own seasons.
I have no problem with it. They are tasked to control their herds and meet their budgets. That doesn't mean I'm happy about it.

RE: more on western states non-res price gouging
Non-resident Regular elk - $641; Special elk - $1,141. was $ 481 $881
Non-resident Regular deer - $366; Special deer - $606. was $261 $ 461
Non-resident regular antelope - $366; Special antelope - $556. was $226 and $426
Non-resident moose - $1,416. was $1201
Non-resident Bighorn sheep - $2,266. was $ 1901
I haven't seen anything to indicate a rise in resident pricing ... which right now a resident elk tag in WY ? $ 43
$ 43 compared to $ 641 for a non-res next year ?
I wish Arkansas would charge me $3 a gallon for gas, and when WY residents pass through my state, they get charged $45 a gallon. Unfair ? Why ? I LIVE in Arkansas, I pay taxes for the roads that are built, as a resident I pay for the salaries of everyone who maintains them, traffics them, I pay for everything that non-residents don't - right ?
These prices are ridiculous - they're pricing people OUT of hunting, and at a fast rate. Its a cash cow, that needs stopped and stopped soon or hunting will suffer for it worse than it already has.
Anymore, I find it hard to not justify going to these western states and killing elk and mule deer without a license - shouldn't the animals that are on Federal lands be enjoyed by everyone equally ? or at least FAIRLY ?
My son is 6 years old ......... when he's 13-14 I'd love to take him to the Rockies where I've hunted elk in the past. In 7-8 years, thats going to be a $1000 tag for each of us, and I don't know if I'll be able to afford it at that time.
So what are my choices ? Don't hunt ? Is that what we're coming to in America, where if you aint rich you can't hunt out west ? I don't think thats right, I just don't

Agood way to get your gun and vehicle confiscated and go off to jail.
i sometimes hunt in Wyoming and do not find their non-resident hunting license fees to be out of line. The SCOTUS has ruled with Wyoming on this issue. One has the option of going somewhere else.
What are the "Special tags"? I hunted in Wyoming in 2003 and I don't remember that...???

That seems a little exhorbitant considering all of the fees sportsment pay for guns, ammo, etc. I can see charging somebody from out of state more because they don't pay local taxes to maintain roads, etc. but those price increases seem overboard.

very few things cost more as a non-resident .... think about it. When you go to another state, WHAT costs you more ? Food ? Gas ? Entertainment ? Do the tickets you buy to anything cost mroe because of a residency ?
I understand animals a finite resource, and there are only so many to go around. But fact is, and I've said this before with little response, the bulk (50-60% or more) of G&F budgets in western states comes from non-resident game tags. Its a cash cow -
