Default NY Governor Abandons License Scheme

NYGovernor Eliot Spitzer has abandoned his driver's licenses for illegals scam.Don't you just love it when a crazy liberal scheme goes awry?

"DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Wednesday he was abandoning a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, but said that the federal government had "lost control" of its borders and left states to deal with the consequences.

"I have concluded that New York state cannot successfully address this problem on its own," Spitzer said at a news conference after meeting wtih members of the state's Congressional delegation.

Spitzer said overwhelming public opposition led to his decision.
The governor introduced the plan with the goal of increased security, safer roads and an opportunity to bring immigrants "out of the shadows."

Opponents charged Spitzer would make it easier for would-be terrorists to get identification, and make the country less safe. Many New Yorkers agreed with them.

About 70 percent of New Yorkers oppose the license plan, according to a Siena College poll of 625 registered voters released Tuesday. The poll, conducted Nov. 5-8, had a sampling error margin of 3.9 percentage points.

Last month, Spitzer sought to salvage the license effort by striking a deal with the Department of Homeland Security to create three distinct types of state driver's licenses: one "enhanced" that will be as secure as a passport; a second-tier license good for boarding airplanes; and a third marked not valid for federal purposes that would be available to illegal immigrants and others."

Dont forget that a lot of local clerks (dunno exact titles) had stated that they would refuse to go along with issuing licenses to illegals even if it passed.

If it would have gone through it would have effected elections in a huge way, that's all you need to register in NY a DL.

So what happens to the rule that one must be a citizen of the US before they can vote? I doubt that the issuance of a voters registration card is solely based on a drivers license. There are plenty of LEGAL immigrants in the US who are not yet naturalized citizens, and have drivers licenses. I highly doubt they are allowed to vote just by being able to show a drivers license because this would be in violation of federal law. A check of ones citizenship has to be included somewhere in this process. I am sure someone would have made a stink about this already if it weren't the case.

It's called a box to check and signiture. No checking is down to verify it.

So you think politicians who might have been on the losing end of elections where legal or illegal immigrants were allowed to vote BEFORE they became naturalized US citizens would not have made HUGE stinks about such voter fraud? I highly doubt it!! If they did lose the election because of such a thing, it serves them right for not defending what is supposed to be the law of the land!

Steve, here is a link to a voter registration card card pay attention to #9 and what they are looking for. If you check the box yes I am a citizen and fill in your DMV or the last four digits of you SS number something tells me your going to be registered.

When I go to vote I don't have to show ID just show up where they have my name and sign, somebody checks the signatures to make sure they match. This year I intentionally signed a little different no problem.

It was called survival. Had he gone through with the law he would have been tarred and feathered out of town. Trying to get it through will scar him politically. He and McCain can have plenty of time to reminisce when they are retired from politics in the next cycle.
