Muzzle loader?
I was reading an article where the muzzle loader season starts before any other season. Cant remeber where. I"™m not bashing muzzle loaders, but why? I can shoot my muzzle loaders as accurate at 150 yards as my center fire rifles. Todays muzzle loaders are a far cry from the iron site traditional ones.
Just curious.

Not really. My iron sighted sidelock muzzle loader will shoot a 4" group @ 200 yards. Todays muzzleloaders just have a more common every day rifle feel, faster twist, better ignition source.
In colorado we share our muzzleloader season with archery and limited Early first rifle season.
No scopes, no pellet powder, no sabots.

RE: Muzzle loader?
Many states use archery and ML seasons to cull the does as a management tool to get the BD ratio in line. Some states hold the ML season before the normal rifle/ shotgun seasons so the culled does wouldn't have been bred. Some biologist figure to take a pregnant doe is counterproductive since one out of every two fawns will be bucks. In this state we have the ML season a week after the regular season long after the rut consequently the does are usually pregnant. The people who want the season to remain at that time do so because it guarantees the hunt will be in snow and the deer have grouped up for winter. I would rather see it before the breeding starts.

Too busy with fishing to spend much time here.
Here on OK the muzzleloader season started this year on 27 October and ran through 4 November. Deer archery season started on 1 October and runs through 15 January. Deer gun season will start on 17 November. There are a couple oflateDecember doe seasonsintwo of the zones.i like this setup.
We have 2 ML seasons here, the early one that asyou mentioned is before the rest of the gun season, and a longer one that is after the rest of the gun seasons.
Honestly Im not sure why its set up like that but I much prefer the late season over the early one.The early one herehas a quota and the tags sell out for it very quickly.Being in early Oct the temperature can be quite warm, the deer dont move well and its uncomfortable hunting when its still hitting 70 and 80 degrees. It coincides with the opening of several other seasons wterfowl and small game and its hard to find a place that nobodies hunting. And the biggest problem is the corn, theres still so much standing corn in the fields the deer just dont have to come out of it in the daylight. All that to overcome and you only get something like 5 or 7 days {cant recall offhand} to fill your tag.Ive never really viewed the early season as giving the guys that hunt it much of an advantage for those reasons.
I think it does give some people, the elderly, kids, disabled, etc... a chance to ML hunt where they probably couldnt do it in the late season here most years.I often find myself fighting several feet of snow, temps below zero and windchills down to -20 or lower. The deer have been pushed into deeper cover in sometimes remore areas that arent easy to get to for a healthy person in thier prime much less people with health problems, old age, very young, etc...I dont base this on any actual information, just my opinion on it.

This article I was reading was in Petersons Hunting mag. They had all taken bucks. I found that odd.

I think a lot of these rules may have been set up before muzzle loaders went so high tech. I wonder if the original idea was to use black powder grains and a minie or other kind of similar projectile. Now they have perfectly measured hard powder charges and sabots that fit perfectly. I think that ML season and rifle ought to open at the same time. But the State Wildlife Commission wouldn't dare change it now.
As advanced as muzzleloaders have become, I still find them MORE "Primitive" in looks and technology than most compound bows with all the bells and whistle attachments they have. Heck, even centefire rifles are in the stone ages technology wise compared to modern bows since the basic bolt-action design has barely changed in 100 years. Of course most bowhunters would have a stroke at the mention of any such thing!!
