Hi Fieldmouse, I can say that I am not totally convinced it is true, but on the flip side.. Im not sure it isnt. The problem with all the "facts" is.. they can be manipulated to fit what you want to say so I am always leary when people say they have the "facts".
IMO, we all need to do our personal best to protect what we have. You only need to raise one child or befriend someone with Asthma to understand how air pollution affects them. Anything we can do to clean up our environment is beneficial. (well at least I cant see a downside to it).
Air polution and Asthma are a totally different subject. Please watch the video this thread has to do with Global Warming and it being man made.

I have two kids myself and come from a very, very large extended family. I don't see where I've made it into a left or right issue. I'm made it to be what it is, a bogus issue. Did you watch that film? It totally debunks the crap that is spewing out about global warming. Now some areas like Cal are mandating Global Warming issues before you will be allowed to build. Boy, that helps out the middle class. How about the Supreme Court getting involved with this nonsense and declairing CO2 a green house gas that the EPA should regulate. Watch the film, CO2 is less then .5% of green house gases andhumans are about #6 on the list for the producers of the stuff. Did you know the oceans are on the very top by far? Also, if you look at the number one green house gas (95% of the stuff) water vapor, I guess were wasting our money with fuel cells since that's the by-product.
Did you know just in the last few weeks Kanas denide a request to build a new state of the art coal plant for electricity?It was going to be owned by 60 co-ops in the area and supply needed energy to the surrounding states? Their reason was global warming and CO2 emmissions. We already have high gas prices not because we don't have the stuff but because we're not aloud to drill and refine the stuff. Right now we are the only industrial nation that a a gas trade deficiet. We have to import about 20% of the gas we use.I guesselectricity will be next. For some reason I bet you mexico won't have an issue with building a plant on their side of the border and run the power lines into the US. I will be cheering them right along to.
You may conserve all you want, I won't stand in the way. Don't force me to do the same.

I've watched that movie and it actually misrepresents a few facts as well, but it makes some good points. This link has 35 errors that were in Al Gore's movie, it's a good read if you want tolook more into the great "Global Warming" conspiracy.
Gore says a scientific study shows that polar bears are being killed swimming long distances to find ice that has melted away because of "śglobal warming."ť They are not. The study, by Monnett & Gleason (2005), mentioned just four dead bears. They had died in an exceptional storm, with high winds and waves in the Beaufort Sea. The amount of sea ice in the Beaufort Sea has grown over the past 30 years. A report for the World Wide Fund for Nature shows that polar bears, which are warm-blooded, have grown in numbers where temperature has increased, and have become fewer where temperature has fallen. Polar bears evolved from brown bears 200,000 years ago, and survived the last interglacial period, when global temperature was 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the present and there was probably no Arctic ice-cap at all. The real threat to polar bears is not "śglobal warming"ť but hunting. In 1940, there were just 5,000 polar bears worldwide. Now that hunting is controlled, there are 25,000.
Ms. Kreider says sea-ice "śwas the lowest ever measured for minimum extent in 2007."ť She does not say that the measurements, which are done by satellite, go back only 29 years. She does not say that the North-West Passage, a good proxy for Arctic sea-ice extent, was open to shipping in 1945, or that Amundsen passed through in a sailing vessel in 1903.

FM, everything our industrialized modern day society does impacts the environment. The world"™s population increases and the byproducts foul our ecco system. If you chose to not believe it then you can do so. As time progresses the ramifications of people who think like you do will come back to haunt us all. Not seeing the forest for the trees will be the death toll for all of us. Everything we do has a consequence and if you fail to see that then you are misguided. The term "śGlobal Warming"ť is just a coverall for saying we are pissing in our own bed. Wake up and start to make change wherever you can. Picking up litter, turning off lights that aren"™t needed and responsible recycling are simple everyday items that can prove beneficial for all of us. If you need to water your garden or lawn do it by rain barrels rather than running the sprinkler. Turning a blind eye to the obvious and denying the consequences of our actions is just wrong. Burn your trash barrel and justify it by saying the amount of particulate matter is diluted by the vast amount of the atmosphere. When you finally realize and admit you were wrong it will be too late. When natures balance starts to fail then life as we know it will be in peril.

Take that argument over seas. We spend millions already taking care of our eco system. I've fished for years in a river that at one time was endangered by polution. We have learned and have enacted laws but now are/have been going over board with no common sense. Go tell China and Russia they have issues.I know the Russians were pretty ticked off with China's latest spill.

Just what exactly does that mean? When it requires more energy to curbsidecollect this stuff and then reprocess itrather then just through it out in the trash is that resposible? NYC right now spends several millions "recycling" however they don't recycle. It all ends up in the same place. It cost's too much. What is the envirormental response? This thread had to do with global warming. Right now we are lead to believe that CO2 is a major problem in society. However you have to turn a blind eye to the real data in order to come to that conclusion.

When natures balance starts to fail then life as we know it will be in peril.
Life as we know it maybe in peril, but lifeisn't. The earth's climate has been oscillating for billions of years. So the surface gets a degree or twowarmer over the next few hundred years. It would've happened anyway. We'll adapt to the changing environment as we always have. This is not the end of the world, and your children are not going to die in some tidal wave.

All good points guys but IMO the basic question is are we (the worlds population)negatively impacting our environment. To say no...doesn't make sence to me. The pesticides we spray, the waters we divert at the expense of fish, the timber we cut without regard to erosion...and on and on. Global warming... is it a myth? I do admit I think it is somewhat overstated but add that issue along with many of the other perrils we are bringing to planet earth and I do believe we are moving in a bad direction. The fossil fuels we burn can't possibly be good for the air we breath and over time could result in a change in the climate. Either way I hate to chance it. The melting ice cap might just be a natural fluctuation which has ocurred many times or is it the canary in a coal mine? Time usually answers questions and in a decade or two perhaps we will know the real story.
