In all honesty I really never knew you should put your hand over your chest during the National Anthem. (Pledge of Allegiance YES) but have always just stood at attention with hands folded and hat off for the Anthem. I don't think this is a big deal for Obama.
Disclamer... I am not saying I would vote for anyone on that stage just saying that I don't think Obama did anything wrong. He looks very respectful with his hands folded.

Removing one's hat is also an accepted form of respect for the Natl. Anthem, it's usually held over the heart, the hand over the heart is mostly for civillians. Military personnel in uniform are required to face the flag and salute, they do not "uncover" in public since that would render them "out of uniform". In the photo if Obama were truly respectful of our anthem's traditions he would have his hand over his heart, it looks to me like he's deliberately not doing so, especially since everyone else is displaying the proper gesture of respect. Small wonder that the Hildebeast has twice his poll standing, she knows how to play to a crowd.

It looks like he's standing there, twiddling his thumbs...
The caption from the "original" photo that ran in Time Magazine:
Quote:
Respect
Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton and Ruth Harkin stand during the national anthem.
Funny, I'm not seeing the "respect" part...
Even people who HATE the U.S. put their hand over their heart for the National Anthem... Just look at Hillary.
ipscshooter: Your comment is interesting. I do not put my hand over my heard during the National Anthem. If wearing a hat, I remove my hat during the National Anthem but do not put my hand over my heart. When reciting the Pledge of Allegiance I put my hand over my heart. These were the customs I was raised with growing up in Illinois. I just feel odd putting my heart over my hand during the National Anthem, I'm definitely not trying to be disrespectful. It is kind of like flying the flag at night (din the dark, without illumination)or during inclement weather -- I didn' think you were supposed to do those things, but I see it done all the time (particularly with respect to inclement weather).
But your main point, that Hillary is a disrespectful, weasel, soul-less, pollwatcher. . . sure, I'll buy that.
