They passed a state LAW so 11-year-olds can get birth control pills at school, and the parents don't have to be notified. Is it even legal for 11 year olds to engage in sexual activity in Maine? The state/school has rights over the kids that the parents don't, and make what I'm sure is anillegal act easier and more acceptable. So who's going to be held responsible if the pills don't work? What if the kid gets an STD? Unbelieveable.........

The way I read the articles I have seen is that it isn't a state law but a proposal that was passed by the local school board allowing this to happen at one school.
Quote:
Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.
The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.
About 40% of women who take birth-control pills will have side effects of one kind or another during the first three months of use. The vast majority of women have only minor, transient side effects. Some of these side effects are: light bleeding between menstrual periods, skipped periods, nausea, weight change, bloating, increase in vaginal infections. Although it is difficult to predict whether a woman will develop one of these minor problems, a problem can often be eliminated by changing to a different birth-control pill. A spotty darkening of the skin on the face may appear and may be permanent.
The most serious side effect associated with the birth-control pill is a greater chance of blood clots, stroke and heart attack. These problems occur in only a small number of women who take the pill. Women who have the most risk of developing these problems are women who smoke, are over thirty-five and women with other health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or vascular disease or blood cholesterol and triglyceride abnormalities. Other serious side effects are worsening of migraine headaches, gall bladder disease, increase in blood pressure and an extremely rare liver tumor. Some birth-control pills may cause changes in the levels of fatty substances in the blood. The long-term consequences of these changes are not known. Regular check-ups are important for early detection of these problems.

All the more reason to end the forced indoctrination of our kids. Time for school choice. Until that happens, I hope you make the right choice and send your kids to private school.

A woman taking birth-control pills should always ask her healthcare provider about any possible effect on birth-control pill effectiveness when another drug is prescribed so that she can use an additional backup method of birth-control.
How does the school handle the above after the pills are given ?

Taking birth-control pills does not seem to increase a woman's chances of developing cervical cancer or skin cancer. A few months after stopping birth-control pills, women who have taken pills become pregnant just as often as those who have not.
Who here thinks an 11 year old has the dicipline to take the pills without missing one ?
This whole things has gaping holes all in it - its an absolute disgrace to have this passed. I would remove my kids immediately from that school. If several hundred parents would, the financial snowball following the loss of those students would tell the school district who decided what.
Birth control is a good thing. Could you imagine me creating a house full of childen in my image? Woe to humanity...
That being said, kids are underthe domain of theirparents, not aschool administration. I don't know what the law is in Maine, but only parents should determine the course of action within their children's reproductive healthcare.

Another thought about this. If kids the age of 11 have right to use birthcontrole, would that not also mean they have the right of consent? Now that is a very scary thought.
I can hear it now from Joe pedophile, "Thankyou Maine".

I am willing to bet that 11 yr olds can legally have sex in Maine, just as children and adults of any age. The kicker is likely consent, age difference in partners, any use of force or cooercion, and capacity to give consent. I believe in MN, as long as there is not an age difference of 3 or more years, force or cooercion, disability and neither child is over the age of 16 then children can legally have sex.
Children physically/sexually mature faster these days than when we were younginsand 11 yr olds can get pregnant. I am not saying that I would support legislation like this though.
