Default NASA launches asteroid mission

Asteroid Mission eh? or is the feds at it again...?

Dawn's mission is the world's first attempt to journey to a celestial body and orbit it, then travel to another and circle it as well. Ion-propulsion engines, once confined to science fiction, are making it possible.

Most importantly, Dawn has three ion engines that will provide a gentle yet increasingly accelerating thrust. Electrons will bombard Dawn's modest supply of xenon gas, and the resulting ions will shoot out into space, nudging the spacecraft along.

Even "Star Wars" had only twin ion engines with its T.I.E. Fighters, Rayman noted with a smile earlier in the week.

The mission costs $357 million, excluding the unpublicized price of the rocket.

Question: Money well spent ?

Money spent on space exploration has always been criticized, but usually, the advances in techonlogy have been worthy ... from velcro to the microwave oven, non-space relatedbenefits have arisen. Thene there's the space related benefits. Will we someday need to deflect a world-destroying asteroid or comet? Could happen. It would be nice to have the technology to do that if and when it arises, yes?

The microwave oven was an accidental byproduct of research on radar, not space exploration, but I like the way you think...

Oops. I was sure... yeah, you're right. But thanks for the compliment.

Nope

An asteroids gotta be moving at pretty good clip through space I would think, Im just to lazy to look it up.No gravity and no air combined with that would lead me to believe we find it difficult to even land on let alone work on one, would be cool though[8D]

Ok now it is time for Kathkid to come up with a theory that we are all doomed from a pending direct hit from an asteroid and the mission was sent to try and destroy it before we all die. The government isn"™t telling us"¦.right Kath.

Nah, there's no conspiracy angle for Katdung to whine about.
