The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has coopted the idea of the "doomsday clock" of the cold war to represent the proximity of our state to a surveillance society!!! And the clock is set at 6 minutes from midnight! At midnight our car turns into a pumpkin . . . no, I mean we slip into the black hole of a "surveillance society" where we have no secrets that the government is not privy to. Darn it! I hate it when that happens!
You know, if the clock has 24 hours in the day and we are at 23 hours and 54 minutes along the scale, that doesn't leave a whole lot of resolution for representing other higher degrees of surveillance -- like surveillance in North Korea, surveillance formerly (maybe still now?) in China, surveillance in Russia and the eastern block countries. This is kind of like having a seismic scale from 1 to 10 and having a bluejay fart calibrated at 9.5.
This is just silly. I get a gas out of such pompousness. I wish the ACLU would take all of our freedoms seriously and take an interest in protecting our right to keep and bear arms. I wonder what the ACLU's view of the Washington DC gun ban is? I know there view is that there is no unrestricted right to keep and bear arms, just as there is no unrestricted right to free speech, so gun control and regulation is no skin off their back (odd tolerance in light of their sensitivity to any slight of any other freedoms), but the distinctive feature of the Washington DC ban is that it is a blanket and complete ban -- not regulation, prohibition.
