Default Farms in New York City??

Judging by the amount of people in Manhattan who receive agricultural subsidies you would think there would be hundreds of acres of farm land on the island. But as you've probably guessed, that isn't the case.
But that doesn't stop your tax dollars from providing these subsidies to Manhattanites who, judging by the fact that they can afford to live in Manhattan, don't need a government subsidy to begin with.

Take a look at the map. Those red spots are the home address of people who receive over a quarter-million dollars in agricultural subsidies each and every year! The map must be accurate, it was developed and used by Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns in a recent speech.

In July our newly reformed, earmark-free, Democratic led Congress passed another farm bill. Any changes? No. The income threshold is still at $1 million and there are still loopholes which allow for their liberal Park Avenue constituents to gain thousands of dollars for their rooftop garden parties.

All at the taxpayer's expense. Don't ya just love it!

Don't pick on New York. Every farmer in the country, with a brain, is collecting . You can check your neighbors pull on the internet. Mine pulls down a 100000 a year for Corn and Soy. This keeps price down for processers who are paying off the politicians. Don't you love it?

A farm owner does not neccessarily have to live on the farm, so that explains the map. But subsidies, expecially for corn, need to end. Ethonol is driving up the price of corn, and thus food. Farmers will soon be at the point where their income is the same (or more)as without subsidies, but they will be earning it by growing and selling corn.

Actually, there are only six people on that map who receive over a quarter million dollars. The rest of those spots could have received anything from $1.00 up to $249,999.

Not so difficult to understand... You don't have to live on the farm to get the subsidies, youjust have to own the farm. My grandparents and many uncles and aunts raised their families by working as tenant-farmers or sharecroppers... leasing the farmland that they worked.

Only "hundreds of acres"? My mom has a 160 acre farm of which a little more than half is actually farmable, and she gets subsidies. Less than $2000 per year, which works out to about $20 per farmable acre. So, you must need quite a bit of land to rack up a quarter mill... Those six addresses are probably attorney's offices, as the attorneys probably act as the registered agent forcorporate holding companies set up to own tens or hundreds of thousands of acres.

i do not have a problem with the federal government helping small farms.Like a lot of federal programs, this farm support thingis another good intentioned federal program run amok. Every time this program comes up for renewal the Republiklans and Demonrats talk of helping the "small family farmer." Right-70 percent of farmsupport moneygoes to ten percent of the fat cat "farmers" who reward said politicians with donations.

There are people out there who cut a path through the boonies and call it a nature trail and get a kick. NOBODY even knows it is there.
