My knowledge on this subject is very limited, but extreme temperatures has nothing to do with whether global warming is or isn't a phenomenon that is occurring, I don't think. The average temperatures are what are more important.

I've been trying to pull up the link but I haven't been able to in the last couple of days. The hotest years on record were the 30's according to the latest research. They say shotty data and number fudging have been found in calculating the 90's temps. It doesn't surprise me when you see where the thermometers are put.

Now, IF Global warming really does cause extreme temps, why aren't all the above records in the past few years ?
Because its a joke, thats why. /quote]
The period in question seems to be from 1891 to 2004 and the mid-point of this period would be the year 1947. If we count the number of days in Augustthat the record high was either set or tied after 1947 we get 27 days. If we count the number of days before 1947when a record high was set or equaled we get only 4 days. It appears you need to do amorecomplete analysis of data sets before drawing conclusionsabout what they might show.
i've tried hard to see both sides of the global warming debate. One thing stands out in my mind. For decades there were those who claimed that there was no such thing as acid rain. Now many of the trout streams that i fished in WV in the 50s, 60s and 70s are ecologically dead due to acid rain. Not a living thing in some of them.
falcon: And you draw what correlation between your experience with acid rain and global warming?
All: Bear in mind that global warming and connection between human behavior and global warming are two different subjects. Our climate does not remain constant, as many historical experiences of climate changes in our past witnesses. I refer you to the ~500 year long "Little Ice Age" that took place from about 1325 ADto 1850 AD; I refer you to the "Medieval Warming Period" that took place from about 1000 AD to 1200 AD. There seems to be evidence of "mega droughts" in the American southwest -- droughts lasting 125 years. I have not heard anyone claiming the "Little Ice Age" or the "Medieval Warming Period" were caused by human behavior.
To the voices that say "let's change our behavior, it can't hurt" I say it depends on. If that means, be smart, make one trip to the grocery store per week rather than every day; if that means drive the fuel efficient car to work and use the gas hog Suburban for short trips . . . why sure, that doesn't hurt. To those who say, work within 5 miles of your home, set your air conditioner at 85 degrees, don't drive long distances for vacation, take a shower once a week, drive only a Prius, I have other things to say. At a very high level, substantially reducing our energy consumption, and hence our output of CO2 which is created generating the electricity that forms most of our energy consumption, means substantially diminished standards of living. Bear in mind that 1/2 the world's population lives in Asia, much of which is not developed, much of which is rapidly developing today. These people live pretty meagre lives and they want the increased standards of living that come from the energized technologies that we in the west already enjoy. This leads to current very large scale expansion of coal fired electrical generation facilities in India and China. Without some solution to this specific issue -- large scale expansion of coal fired electrical generation facilitiesin India and China (we're talking on the order of 800 new plants over the next 5 years, approximately, there was an article in Newsweek that discussed this earlier this summer or spring) -- car pooling, parking the suburban and driving the Toyota Corolla isn't going to make a dent.
But still, in my mind the big issue is whether there is a substantial contribution of human behavior to global warming and even if global warming is happening (this later seems quite possible to me, though not definitely and conclusively established).

RE: I got your "global warming"
Californiadoctor what ? why a midpoint of 1947 ? As "Global Warming" increases, extreme heat and cold temps are suppose to occur. Why aren't all the records of highs and lows in the past few years then ?
Becuase its a joke, thats why.
The heat wave in the south, the Texas flooding, the western wildfires ....... all are attributed to Global Warming. Global Warming is a huge umbrella and everything goes under it.
falcon - I'd bet acid rain didn't kill those streams, pollution being poured into them did.
