Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Basra Deteriorates after British pull out; Sign of things to come for the U.S?

As British leave, Basra deteriorates
Violence rises in Shiite city once called a success story
As British forces pull back from Basra in southern Iraq, Shiite militias there have escalated a violent battle against each other for political supremacy and control over oil resources, deepening concerns among some U.S. officials in Baghdad that elements of Iraq's Shiite-dominated national government will turn on one another once U.S. troops begin to draw down.
Three major Shiite political groups are locked in a bloody conflict that has left the city in the hands of militias and criminal gangs, whose control extends to municipal offices and neighborhood streets. The city is plagued by "the systematic misuse of official institutions, political assassinations, tribal vendettas, neighborhood vigilantism and enforcement of social mores, together with the rise of criminal mafias that increasingly intermingle with political actors," a recent report by the International Crisis Group said.
After Saddam Hussein was overthrown in April 2003, British forces took control of the region, and the cosmopolitan port city of Basra thrived with trade, arts and universities. As recently as February, Vice President Cheney hailed Basra as a part of Iraq "where things are going pretty well."

Is anyone surprised? You can't tame savages, only control them for awhile. Let them kill each other off, then move in and take over the oil.

Yep, the various factions of the Shia are killing each other off in record numbers and making life miserable for everyone. This is SOP for Arabs who are not under the firm grip of a well entrenched and powerful dictator. Look at the situation in Palestine. Some of you will not believe this:No Arab countrywill never have real democracy. A democracy weakens the tribal leaders.

It is hard to get a firm figure on the number of tribes in Iraq but there are hundreds. The only country that i can get a figure for is Sudan with 500 tribes. Many, if not most, Arab tribes are residentin several countries. For example, the Anazi tribe has sheiks in Saudi, Jordan, Qatarand other countries. Arab tribes can be at war for five generations after which negotiations must take place and the problem settled. Although fighting may have wained, many Arab tribes are technically at war with each other and it does not take much for the situationto re-ignite into a full scale war.

Yep, democracy will spread from Iraq all over the middle east. [:'(][:'(]
