RE: The bridge????????????
My take: Metal fatigue that was previously documented, high heat causing metal expansion and improper loading as a result of traffic lanes closed down in one direction and bumper to bumper traffic rerouted on one side in the remaining lanes. If it were bombs tests would show the presence of explosive residue. Unfortunately, as our highway infrastructure ages more failures of this type can be expected.

Too busy with fishing to spend much time here.
It said they were resurfacing some of the lanes, when they scrape the top layer off the roadway if that what they were doing those machines just vibrate the hell out of everything, if theyre doing roads in towns {here anyway} theyll actually send someone in to check out the surrounding buildings before they start if they look like they may have structural problems, they closed the bar here in town last summer when they redid main street because they were afraid it might come down from the vibration.
It wouldnt suprise me that and the metal fatigue, plus the congested traffic Champlaign spoke of all came together to contribute to the collapse.A bridge that size you really only need one weak spot to bring the whole thing down, one section gives more are going to follow, its like a chain reaction
Nothing terror related and foolish to even say at this point. Fatigue, the likely cause, in a 40 year old bridge that was designed to last 70 years. Still a lot of folks here in the Twin Cities a little shaken up about.
I would hate to be thePM engineer right about now...he is probably not around anymore and it may turn out to be a good thing.
I am just glad the river is relatively small up there and not the size that it is down where i am from.

You make a good point about the mississippi being narrower up here, as things would have likely be worse yet, with a longer bridge.
I feel so "over saturated" with bridge related info, that I am ready to hear just about anything else. [&o]
Big Duane... You missed a couple of possible explanations: Bush did it, because Cheney pointed out that there were an inordinate number of Democrats in Minneapolis, and taking out the bridge would keep them away from the polls. Or, it might have been global warming...
Seriously, condolences to those whose loved ones were killed in this tragedy.
