I just saw a story on the news about a college kid who put a koran in a toilet and then "desecrated" it. The story said he was arrested and charged with a felony hate crime. I definitely think the kid should be charged by campus police for criminal damage or mischief, but a felony? What do you guys think?
Yes lets see the story and the follow up of the ACLU picking up the cost for the defense.

Id kinda like to see more about the felony harrassment end of the charge before jumping on the bandwagon, that would suggest a little more then flushing a book down a toilet. The artical mentions vandalism and other events before this so Im just kinda curious what else he did before he was arrested.
It's stupid. All of this "hate crime" legislation is ridiculous! It's gotten to where the government is trying to punish people's thought processes.[:@]

RE: Felony Hate Crime?
I really cant add any more. It just makes me sick how we will bend over backwards to protect a Muslim, but will let the country lose on Christians. Oh yea, I forgot, they belong to the peaceful religion who wants to destroy America. [:'(]
Now why is it not a hate crime when Maryln Manson rips up a Bible during his concerts? What ever happened to even steven.

I was thinking the same thing, but all ive found, heard, or saw is that this guy was throwing the quaran in the can and leaving it there. I might be wrong, but they have yet to identify a target to his hate crime. It appears, as of now, that this is a hate crime agianst all muslims. If this turns out to be the case, im going to puke.

I think "hate crimes" are a farce. Every murder, rape, etc. involves some degree of hatred, contempt or plain lack of concern for a fellow human being. To single out some (but not all) crimes and label them as "hate crimes" because of race, religion, etc. is the same thing as saying there is a double standard and those people who are not in this protected class are somehow less worthy, etc.
As for calling this particular incident with the Koran a hate crime, I think that is dangerous territory to step into legally. We don't prosecute people for desecrating the American flag, holy bibles, etc. and we should not carve out some special (and totally assinine) exception for the Koran. Just my .02 but I'm tired of different groups getting special treatment which is totally unAmerican.[:@]
