Default Question for you.....

When I was at a doctors appointment this past Tuesday, the nurse I spoke with prior to seeing the Doctor, asked if I used tobacco and I answered no, recently quite. The she goes on to ask if I had any guns in the home. I answered "yes, I am a hunter." She then asked if I had them locked up, and I said "yes." My appointment was for a non-serious medical issue.
I get that it is prudent to have firearms locked up in the home for safety and to prevent theft, and I also get that someone having firearms in the home could and should be a concernif that someoneis unsafe/unstable due to mental illness, such as being suicidal.
I guess I am questioning why the firearms question was necessary? I also find myself a little irritated with it.
Anyone got any sensible explanation for why the question was necessary given the nature of the appointment?

Did she ask if you owned a pit bull or drank homo milk?

No one else thinks the questioning was a bit odd, misplaced or inappropriate? Sort of like my wife going in to getthe oil changed in her carand being asked what kind of feminin hygiene products she prefers......

The gun question I think is very ubsurd. However, I don't think the tobacco question is that weird considering the effects it can have on your health and you are at the doctor's office.

I have heard about those questions but it must be a state thing. In NC you have to own a gun by law.

I agree that the tobacco question makes sense, but the question regarding firearms seems unwarranted, as I was not talking as if I was going to croke myself or kill others.

It absolutely is but your in the mid-west correct? I think it was from someone who lived in Chicago who told me about that. I would have said it's none of your business or it's in my glove box, want to see it?

That is a bit odd Red, Id have to go with FM and tell her its none of her businuessUnless you came in with a gunshot wound or she wanted to strike up a conversation about hunting it seems a pretty immaterial question for a medical visit. The smoking ones common enough though

Well, did this really happen or is this a hypothetic question? Because the exact same thing was claimed numerious times by other posters.

I of course would not answer.
