I hates Smoky the bear, now I hate Bambi
Letting the woods grow up in brush is exactly what makes it so bad when they DO burn. Every forest should be burned every 5 to 10 years, and the above idiots aint got sense enough to know it [&o]
BTW that AD council ? Anyone recognize the MANY ads that they run ? Who are they ? Where do they get there money ? Who's name are they speaking in when they talk this nonsense ?
You have a point BD. Fires generally should be allowed to occur and run their course naturally. This is only a recent philosophy of wild land management officials and it is the correct one. However, prevention of man-made or accidental fires is probably still a good thing.
I can't quite tell but that middle symbol in the bottom of that ad might stand for Timber companies or something. I'm sure they, as well as parts of the forest service, would still rather see harvest then burn and incorrectly so.

Duane, I hate to ruin your hatred of animated characters but those ads arent really aimed at stopping managed, controlled burns on pices of timber, theyre more geared towrds the idiot campers who break camp and leave thier fires going or the smoker who throws an lit cig out in the dry leaves in the middle of a large track of widerness, people burnin trash on windy dry days etc....
Most people shouldnt really try a controlled burn on thier own either unless they really know what theyre doing or have professional help with it.
The part about saving our animal freiends could be debatable in the message, its got an anti hunting overtone to it but the animals do need thier habitat to survive, anyway, thats just MHO of the ad for what its worth.
An old girlfriend of mine was the P/R person for a timber company. Almost exclusively, it was her job to speak at schools about forest fires and distribute smokey the bear paraphenalia. Now, definately we should educate for the prevention of accidental fires, but there were definately politics involved with the old smokey the bear campaigns when it came to natural fire suppression (I'm talking mostly about the western part of the country here)
Who could dislike ol Smokey though.

didn't native americans burn forests ? putting fires out is only a few decades old, before they didn't have the technology to do it
petasux lightening strikes cause far more fires than careless campsites ever do. you have a point but the overall message is forest fires are bad, and they are NOT bad
several species of trees needs fire to properly germinate, the ecosystems in general prosper in the years after fires.
fires are GOOD ..... but you won't see Smoky or Bambi saying that
I've never heard of that. If they did, and I had to guess why, I'd probably say to drive out animals so they could shoot them (or run them off a cliff). I doubt it would be for "sound forest management" afterall, they had mother nature for that. Interesting though.

Wouldn't burning be better than timbering for regrowth? I am sure that the ashes has some kind of nutrient for the soil. Unlike if you remove the whole tree and not let it decay to put nutrients back into the ground for proper regrowth. And do they replant anything besides ever greens after a timber job or strip job? Maybe other types of trees can't grow in these areas?

Maybe you should go to the website... Smokey and Bambi have whole sections of their site dedicated to discussions of fire-dependent eco-systems and the benefits of fires in these ares.
Seen Bambi at the show back in the 60's, I can remember thinking I sure would like a shot at his Dad, I would have also taken Bambi out later in the show when he got some Bone on his head!
Oh, yes Forest Fires are a good thing when controlled!

ipscshooteryes I went there, but the advertisments have always been and said " fires bad " when thats the farthest thing from the truth !
mid-west people still burn there fields/farms - soutern states burn too - great for the soil. QDM now knows that opening up the forest to sunlight = browse, a very good thing. I remember reading/seeing photos from high Colorado mtns in the early 20th century, and then photos taken 50 years later and the whole forests are overgrown.
Yellowstone overgrew because they put out fires for year, then decided to let it burn and goodness burn it did !
California burns every year because the underbrush is so thick from never allowing it to burn !
Indians burned .... my granddad and Dad remembers the forests being so open you could ride a horse and now they're so thick you can't ride an ATV
