What are the treatments available today and how effective are they?
What role does the FDA play in the war against cancer?
Why is cancer considered the second biggest business on the planet next to petroleum?
It's said that in this day and age 42% of all Americans will develop cancer at least once in their lifetime.
Although we know more about cancer than we did 33 years ago when the war against cancer began, we still know next to nothing about how to cure it - even after $60 billion has been spent since the early 70's on cancer research. Why are the same drugs being used in chemo after 30 years of proving most of them ineffective? Why are these same drugs being used after dozens of studies have shown that these drugs cause cancer?
Why is it that at the turn of the 19th century 3% of the population died of cancer where as today 24% of the popultion will die of cancer?
Why?
Oh yeah, what do you suppose the hungry wolves scrapping to take the helm wish to do about the biggest killer of Americans?

Cancer occurs when a cell undergoes what is known as malignant transformation which means that after aseries of geneticmutations, the cell is no longernormal in its function. Furthermore, the mechanisms that stop uncontrolled reproduction no longer operate and the malignant cells continue to increase through the process of uncontrolled mitosis. Further mutations result in the cells becoming invasive and they enter surrounding tissue. Finally, the tumor cellsbecome metastatic and spread to other parts of the body.
The cause of the genetic changes that leads to the malignant transformation of normal cells is probably a combination of genetic predisoposition and environmental insults such as smoking.
The three principle treatments for cancer are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Surgery and radiation therapy are only effective if the tumor is still localized and has not undergone distant metastasis. These treatments can be very effective if the cancer is diagnosed early but this is unfortunately often not the case. Cancer that has undergone distant metastisis is treated with chemotherapy which is effective in some malignancies such as some types of leukemia, lymphomaand testicular cancer. Unfortunately, in the case of most solid tumors such as lung cancer, breast cancerand colon cancer,by the time a tumor has undergone distant metastisis it has experienced 30 doublings and that almost insures thatat least someof the malignant cells are going to be resistant to all of the chemotherapy agents we have and the prognosis is poor.
The fundamental problemin curing cancer is achieving differential toxicity which means we need a means of killing cancer cells that does not also kill so many normal cells that the patient dies from the treatment. Recently, cancer research has focused on developing more targeted therapies that destroy cancer cells while sparing normal cells. This is difficult to do and progress will probably be slow. Becausemost current anti cancer drugs cause chromoseme damage they are toxic and oncogenic.
The statistic that 42% of Americans will develop cancer in their lifetimes is somewhat decieving in that a large percentage of these cancers will be skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoms which are technically malignant, but hardly ever metastasize and become life threatening.
Cancer incidence has probably increased over the past hundred years for two reasons. One is smoking which peaked in the late 20th century. The other is that people live longer now and are less likely to dieyoung of other cuases such as infectious diseases. Cancer incidence increases dramatically with age and as fewer people die of things like pneumonia when they are relatively young, more will die of cancer as they get older.
At the turn of the 19th century, other things were more likely to get you before cancer. Also, a cancer death could go undetected, chalked up to "consumption".

You know I don't know. But just last week, we buried my Aunt Susan in Ky who fought cancer for a short 5 months. It took her quick. Here's the strange thing. This lady took more care of her self than anyone I know. She was so maticulous about her wieght, and always wieghed 120-130lbs, never saw her overeat. Rarely ate port, or beef, and mostly ate vegs. Never smoked, never drank, and fast walked 2-5miles a day. Cancer seems to not care. It can hit anyone at anytime.
Her mother died at 50 of leukemia, so maybe she was predisposed to it. In Eastern Ky/southern WVthier cancer death rates are so much more than rest of the coal mines. I dont care what anyone says, I believe the coal mines have poisoned the ground water.

i am very familiar with that part of the country and agree with you. There is/was also all of those chemical plants in southern WV. The stench as you drove through Charleston, WV was terrible, maybe it still is. The only place in the world other than Bhopal, India where methylisocyanate wasmade was in Charleston, WV. They did haveat least one well publicizedrelease of the stuff in WVafter the Bhopal disaster.

I was going to buy 50 acres recently in wayne county WV, right below some of those plants. I decided against it. I don't know if I could get used to that smell while hunting.
Yep, smell still there on I64 from charleston to huntington. And then when you get to Ashland, ky, you got Ashland oil to smell.
I am not sure there is any one way to get cancer.. I had a nephew that lived in Anchorage and developed cancer at the age of 17 he was sent to a childrens hospital in Seattle. He never smoked and neither did his parents. He is now 19 staying in Seattle still and had recently graduated from high school. ( 1 of his dreams ) He had been given treatments and opperated on several times in the past couple of years and still struggling with it. It has been all through him and currently in his liver. His blood has stopped being produced and it is hard to tell how much longer he has left. The doctors say everyone has cancer cells and something can hit them that will trigger them to grow. AllI know for sure is that cancer doesn't matter how old or young you are when it hits you. Some areas appear to have more cancer out breaks than other areas. But, none the less cancer kills and sometimes it doesn't matter how soon it was found.. and it can come in many types and forms..
