Army misses recruiting goal for second month
'We're not taking this lightly,' spokesman says of slip in enlistments
Recruits fall short of Army standards
In addition to the increasing unhappiness with the war, Baggio said that recruiting has been hampered by the fact that seven in 10 potential recruits do not meet Army standards. They are largely failing to meet weight and education requirements.
Also, Curt Gilroy, the Pentagon's director of accession policy, said in a recent AP interview that the global war on terror is causing many parents and other adults who influence young people to steer them away from military service. At the same time, Gilroy said, the U.S. economy has been strong, providing other more lucrative job prospects.
I went to agraduation this year out of approx 450 kids 5 were enlisted. 16 were going to work and the rest some type ofpost education. Its more than fat. This is the message they are getting.
They are largely failing to meet weight and education requirements.
Yep - I can see that. Cowardly is a strong word - maybe lack of patriotism - duty - service/dedication to country - Toughen It - Fill in the blanks.....

How about - just plain - Whoosy Heads!!
I thought patriotism had something with up holding the laws of the constitution also??
I, unfortunately, had problems with my weight. I made the stupid mistake of adding a few pounds at the request of my Sgt. to compete in the heavy weight weight lifting competition in the commanders cup. I ALWAYS had to be taped. I developed severeshin splints in basic and I always had trouble running. I still averaged about 14 mins. in my 2 miles. I was at or above 70% in all my PFT's.
I was put on the weight control program. To get off of it I was required to lose so many pounds a week. We were in a extra PT program every evening. Despite the docs and the nutritionists telling me I needed aerobic exercises, the NCOIC of PT made us lift weights. I steadily lost inches and bodyfat but to get off weight control you HAVE to lose the weight and I was gaining it. When I was sent back to the DOCS and the nutritionists they all told me the reason I wasn't losing was because I would gain until I reached a certain weight, andI needed aerobic exercise. So back to the unit I go with this info. Guess what I was doing for PT? You guessed it, lifting weights. AR600-9 said the only way to get off the program was to lose the weight, regardless of body fat % loss. After 4.5 years I got tired of the BS and got out.
I was a good soldier and I never received a negative comment in my counseling or from any supervisor. I LOVED the Army, but the BS finally got so bad I had enough. The situation I and others were in set us up for failure.
Oh please, try blind nationalism. Of course recruiting is down, as it should be, perhaps more people are realizing that they don't want to get their head blown off for some bull**** reason, like Oil, money, imperialism.
And about weight and education. All of this is connected. When the us spends over 600 billion a year on war, and 38 billion on education, you've got a huge problem, when any society does that.
