Apparently, there is a lesson to be learned. The lesson is not that Republicans are fiscally irresponsible. It isn't that Democrats are fiscally irresponsible. It is that GOVERNMENT, with a bipartisan tinge, is fiscally irresponsible. Since we've heard so much about how the Republicans were spending like crazy (which they were, no doubt about it), we could have expected that the Democrats would offer a budget that offered no new appropriations and didn't increase any. In fact, maybe it would perhaps decrease from the FY 2007 budget of $2.8 trillion.
The Democrats unveiled their first budget (for FY 2008) since taking over Congress today. And does anyone want to guess what it does?
Yes, it INCREASES spending. An average of 5% for a variety of cabinets, from Homeland Security to Labor. The total budget for FY 2008 is $2.9 trillion.
Apparently the Democrats like to spend money just as much as the Republicans. But I'll bet you my next paycheck that the same two or three who have criticized Republican spending so incessantly on this forum will be silent or come up with excuses on this.
The Democrats' budget would produce a surplus (of $41 billion) by 2012 as they project it. But Bush's financial plan also shows a surplus by 2012. And Bush's plan takes into account the '01 and '03 tax cuts being made permanent. The Democrats' assumes some rollbacks of the tax cuts after the scheduled 2010 sunset, no military spending in Iraq or Afghanistan after 2009, and other fairly dangerous assumptions.

Somehow i do not see where a budget increase of 100 billion dollars is such a big deal. The Republican budget increased every year that they ran Congress. The US budgetis going to increase every yearwhether the Demonrats or Republikklans are running things.

RE: Fiscal responsibility?
We need new leaders who can run this country like a business without all the pork. Some businesses grow and are vibrant and others go down the tubes often due to poor planning and management. We know we have poor planning and from what I can see no management ...just politics much to the detriment of our country. I wonder what would happen if we threw out all the politicians and hired business managers and foreign affairs specialists. Focus on improving our bottom line rather than the multitude of countries we are spending our money on.

The current farm welfare law is set to expire soon. The Democrat congress will dream up another huge farm welfare bill to replace the current one. Then Bush will sign it.Pork is a "bi-partisan" issue.

Funny mentioned that, I have a buddy who drylands cotton. He has not made a crop in three years, but lives just fine. Actually just bought all new farm equipment and two new trucks.

Yep, cotton really pays off in terms of farm welfare. They care so much about it herethat they often do not even harvest it. When they do harvest it half of the cotton is left in the fieldsand/or scattered along the road to the mill.
