Come on guys, we all know we live in a consumer capitalist nation whose sole underlying principle is to make a lot of money for a few people.
Not only is your interpretation of capitalism incorrect, but the country was not founded for capitalism's sake. It was a part of it, but not an underlying reason, and certainly not the sole one at that.
States like to regulate gas prices for whatever reasons. Some do it for increase revenues, some to attempt to cut usage, some to pay for all kinds of BS garbage coming from the state capitol. The gas companies get their money regardless, and they're not the ones enforcing state laws.

Funny how the Democratic party seems to embrace the issues our Founding Fathers rejected.
