Last year, spending in Iraq amounted to less than 1 percent of the total economy "” about as much as Americans spent shopping online and less than half what they spent at Wal-Mart. Total defense spending is 4 percent of gross domestic product, the figure that measures the nation's economic output.

but you are comparing what consumers spend from their own pockets to what the government sepnds from a limited pool of tax dollars (or in this case the lack thereof).
I think the moral of the story is that the country isn't broke. You know who's broke? Thepeople who are spend more than they make on all kinds of glitzy garbage and pseudo-luxury. That'sbecoming frighteningly more common.

We are way past broke ,we are spending money our kids have not even made yet.
The estimated population of the United States is 301,825,505
so each citizen's share of this debt is $29,227.15.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of $1.42 billion per day since September 29, 2006!
Concerned?

That's pretty funny!!!!!!! I never seem to recal my grandparents or parents complaining that they were tired of paying the bill for WWII, Korea, or Viet Nam. And we all know how thrifty those generations were. I can't even recall the country being all that broke either. Probagate the propoganda and you might get a few more to jump on board!!!!!

So are you saying that he is incorrect, or that we should be ok with a huge debt?
Of course, the fundamental questions is that if the U.S. invaded Iraq and Afghanistan for imperialistic reasons, why aren't we dealing with a surplus of oil and money rather than a large debt.
