I'm confused here. I didn't think that local authorities could arrest or try to deport someone for simply being illegal. I thought that they could only detain someone who is arrested for another crime and then, if they prove to be illegal, it then gets passed along to the INS.

That may be what the told you so that they wouldn't have to do all that extra paperwork in your jurisdiction... Local LEO's CAN detain someone solely for being an illegal. Mostjurisdictions simply have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Treason, in my opinion. They don't bother to get rid of these parasites who are destroying our medical and educational institutions, yet they are right there to give you a ticket if you are a couple days late getting your car's emissions test...

If ours did that, you might have to pay a little more than 5 bucks for seedless watermellons. We are just starting our illegal season.
Fine, produce is going through the roof anyway so I don't care.
Personally Burnie, I think this whining about "You'll pay higher produce costs if you deport the illegals. Boogeyman'll getcha, better not do it,, be very scared."
Crap says I.
$3/gal for fuel to farm and transport the produce affects price far more than the labor to pick it.
I once saw a breakdown on the cost of a $1.20 head of lettuce.
Only $.15 went to the farmer for labor, fertilizer, pesticide, and his profit.
$1.05 was middlemen, stocking, packaging and fuel to transport (the largest single cost).
If the "picking labor" costs trippled, the lettuce might SKYROCKET to $1.35/head.
OMG----- The end of all things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm melting, melting, melting, oh what a world.
Nahh I ain't buying the produce scare tactics, deport'em.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I also say if we crack down on walfare fraud and bust companies who employ illegals, we will force many deadbeats to take a job. I just dont understand why being an American makes everyone feel they are entitled to something more than a chance to work to earn a dollar. Some how we think certain jobs are beneath us simply because we are American. And the media supports this idea. I did some very crappy jobs (just like the illegals do) working my way up the totem pole. Never hurt me one bit. Actually taught me to appreciate a hard day work and the value of a dollar.
