On the way home last night, I was listening to a local radio program and the host made a comment to the regard of "maybe letting people use their fists once in a while would help to reduce the number of times that people turn to guns."
I found this interesting as I somehow see some logic in this. In our society today, fighting is considered aborhorant and even little children are getting charged with assault. I remember growing up and always getting into fist fights, and never outside of some spankings, groundings, detention, seeing the principal, ever getting any worse. Not to say that my pops did not give a mean walop, but no thought for charges. I also remember that using guns was never a consideration to solve problems or express anger. What do others think?
The use of fists over guns is substantial, and always has been. That's whysimple battery outnumbers firearm-related crimes by a substantial number. Having said that, I agree with most of you that the numbers of shootings over BS issues is ridiculous. It's a symptom of our dark culture.
Back in grade school, if you got in a fight, the principal made you box three rounds with your opponent. Best deterrent I ever saw. Liability would doom that strategy today. If a kid gets in a fight at school now, they call the police to the school. We are creating a nation of weenies.
When I was a kid, the guy you fist fought with often became your best friend afterwards. Professionally, I think society goes way overboard on punishing physical violence. A few punches and a black eye is not the end of the world. Losing an eye, breaking ribs, getting disfigured, etc. is going overboard. I still think it's wrong for a person to start hitting another simply because they're mad at the person BUT when 2 people willingly fight, I don't see much of a problem. In my state (CA), that is often referred to as mutual combat and no charges are filed as long as nobody got seriously hurt.
And last but absolutely not least, I think it is pure BS that getting convicted or pleading to battery (a fist fight) should be grounds for a person not to own a firearm. That is just so wrong it's not even funny.

Fist fights, Just fists is fine, boxing is a big sport those guys are cheered when they are in the ring. It's a double standard. It really irritates me that my son can not stick up for himself. Even in self defense my son would get suspended for fighting. He cannot ride his bike to school.
The other night my son was playing with the neighbor boy, and they were just goofin' off and the neighbor boy threw a stick, it hit my son on the top of the shoulder and left a pretty good bruise, my son ran in the house to tell us what happened and asked if the neighbor would be punished. My husband said no he's not because you were throwing sticks and it was fine for you. If you don't want the risk of getting hurt don't throw sticks.
The schools I agree are making our kids wimps. Only in organized sports can you tackle, check, that sort of stuff. In gym we weren't allowed ant of that. We couldn't even slide to base. Now it is getting worse. My son constantly comes home talking about allergies and colds and the flu, ant number of things. I feel like my son is afraid to go anywhere or he might get sick. Since when did they start to instill fear into our children?
Okay Calhunter here's one for you, was listening to the radio and heard that somewhere in CA there was a school where kids would get in trouble for running on the playground. I am not trying to attack you or your state but was wondering if you heard about it and what your take was on it.
My view is there are parents who are afraid their kids are going to get hurt and have said if their kids get hurt they will sue. What do you think?

RE: More Fistacuffs = less guns?
When I was a kid in school, fistfights were part of growing up. If you wouldn't fight, you got labeled as "Yellow". No kid worth his salt wanted that, so whether he got his butt kicked, or did the kicking, he stood up and had at it.
I got some teacher-applied paddelings when I was in school, and if my parents found out about it, I got another at home. Just the way it was.
Seems nowadays if a teacher even looks cross-eyed at a kid, they get called on the carpet for it, let alone actually give the little snot a good whack or two.
We watched TV and saw Hopalong Cassidy, the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, and many others get into gunfights with the "bad guys". We went out into our yards and playgrounds and imitated them. ALL OF US. But yet, we somehow knew this was just "play", and never ever gave a thought to carrying things out with real guns. Most of our fathers were hunters, and had taught us early on what real guns are for, and the serious consequenses of even thinking about touching them. It just wasn't done.
I sometimes wonder if our urban culture is not at a large fault with the mindset that seems to be more and more prevalent today. Urban people who have no need or desire to own a firearm getting to be the majority, and seeing absolutely no reason for anyone to own them. They have invaded our space, taken over, and spread their own type of anti-violence culture upon us. These people grow up, become Legislators and Judiciary, teachers (with university educators in the front of the pack), and take charge of our destiny if we let them, and let them we do.
We send our kids to schools to be "educated" by them. They fill those young minds with their own brand of poison, and set them loose upon the rest of us. Our new leaders of tomorrow.
Thank the Lord that their liberalism and left-wing ideals are not swallowed by all. Not everyone "Drinks the Kool-Aid".
Guess I got a little carried away with things here. Sorry. Just let the kids settle it among themselves. Reminds me of that old saw "War never settled anything". BS. It's the only thing that settles trouble. Always has, always will.
