Default Don Imus

I don't even like this guy, but am I the only one who thinks much ado is being made about nothing?

I heard his comments (thanks to the non-stop coverage cable news is devoting to the issue, I've heard them many times over). I thought they were insensitive, stupid, offensive, etc. If I were a Rutgers player, alumnus or fan, I would be highly pissed off.

But how has this been turned into a race issue? "Natty hair," "hos," "tattoos" . . . those are words that somehow inference race? I always thought a "ho" meant a prostitute. All my life, I've heard it used to reference loose women. In fact, we used it regularly in high school and there wasn't a black girl (or boy) who attended our school or who lived within 30 miles. I don't even know what "natty" means in reference to hair, but I assume it's talking about kinky hair. And I've seen plenty of white basketball women with kinky hair, just as I've seen white basketball women with tattoos.

So what makes his comments racist? Is it simply because he is white and they are black? Oh, that makes sense. So if I say that Barack Obama is a liberal, I'm being racist. Or if I comment about Snoop Dogg's tatoos, I'm being racist?

All the news reports keep wanting to mention that Rutgers' basketball team is made up of eight black players and two white players. Well, he followed up his natty-haired ho comment by saying Tennessee's players were "cute." Tennessee's basketball team is made up of seven black players and three white players.

I'm not sure I follow here.

And of course the Revs. Sharpton and Jackson had to get involved with their two cents worth. Why is it that those guys are constantly trying to make a race issue out of something?

Call Imus' comments disparaging and stupid. Call them sexist. But racist? Not hardly.

No. Imus is an idiot in my book but for crying out loud people, he made a crack whoar quip about a college basketball team. Big freaking deal. I'm sick of the media treating subjects like this on the same level as treason.

That's how they make their millions... Stir up racial strife wherever they can and the money pours in.

The comment was out of line and insensitive but not uncommon for Imus. His show is primarily an entertainment venue with some news and politics thrown in. He is a type of shock jock and has continually through the years thrown out offensive blurbs. The reason why he is so popular is that people like his type of show and are entertained when he makes these comments. We do have freedom of speech and from my pulpit there shouldn't have been any sanctions against him. The CBS and MSNBC 2 week suspension was simply a Hail Mary by the legal eagles they employ to offset the public outcry that was sure to follow. It is called damage control and they could see the fire storm that was hanging on the horizon. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are thugs and were just waiting in the wings for any chance to further their cause...fighting racism by coming down on the white race. Both are just opportunists who will make sure they get involved in anything that even hints of racial problems. I heard the tapes of the Imus show and all those comments were clearly said in jest and not meant to be taken as indicative of the way they really think. Listen to late night Leno, O'Brien or Letterman and they often say things that could be offensive to someone. When they say it people view it as comedy and that is exactly what Imus was doing. I watched the Rutgers news conference and bet the applications for admittance will rise dramatically for next year. They were being opportunists too.

The term is "Nappy" not "Natty" although if you said "Gnatty" it would be a better visual.

What he said was no big deal, just another example of the double standard when white folks mention something outside the box racially and people go nutz. When a minority makes a comment about Whitey it goes unmentioned.

racismand sexism is offensive, regardless of whether there is a double standard. Imus has been spewing invective against a variety of societal groups for years. 'Bout time he got his.

I'd love to put him in a big sack with Moore, Limbaugh, Coulter, and a half dozen rattlesnakes, but then I think "what did those poor snakes ever do to me?" In the balance, the best thing to do is not listen. Turn the station to ESPN.

Like this is the first thing Imus has said that was "questionable" or borderline racist. Whatever, he is a shock jock.

Yea because on ESPN Stewart Scott never says anything like "wow he is fast for a whilte guy" Which is exactly what he said about Rams WR Kevin Curtis last year. I guess thats ok though correct?? Since no one was outraged or whined about it on Oprah.
