It takes a need for a hole to be filled 06. In other words if you ahve a void in a work place, naturally it will fill.
I'm telling you, kids today are spoiled, and they're not interested in swallowing college science and engineering curricula, at least not in the number we'll need to keep these fields from going overseas. The best hope for America right this minute is foreign kids emigrating and being naturalized. HomegrownAmericans have become too comfortable to give a damn about hard work and harder thinking.

As a recent graduate (ok 2 years ago) of an engineering school as well as a judge for the national science fair I think your blanket statement is untrue. Yes, there are spoiled kids that get what they want and have no desire to succeed, but there are also just as many kids that have the drive and desire to be successful. Your tunnel vision is only allowing you to see the bad apples when there are some amazingly intelligent kids today. I had the fortune of going to the number 1 engineering school in the country. (Rose-Hulman Institute of technology look it up) My school was almost completely composed of caucasians/african americans and the quality of engineers Rose produces is second to none. (take one look out our job fair and you would understand) My point is there are excellent home grown students in this great nation and to just assume we need outside help is just ridiculous.

Yes, I exaggerated and used a stereotype. There are a whole lot of good, smart Americans out there making us all proud. My primary point, however, is true. America is not producing engineers and computer scientists quickly enough to satisfy domestic demand. We just don't have enough good, smart, motivated Americans to do it. The results of this cultural phenomenon will almost certainly beretarded economic and technological growth, that is, unless we import skilled workers on a larger scale.
Why the need to import skilled workers? The last several years it seems corporate America is happy exporting technology to the highest bidder overseas, so in effect exporting many jobs.
By the way Indianahunter, I have a cousin currently attending Rose.

Small world... congrats to him/her Rose is one hell of a school and your cousin should get some pretty tasty job offers out of it. I was an idiot and passed up 70k out of college and decided that paying 40k a year for med school was smarter... whoops

Kind of ironic, but a while back I read a blurb on the state of higher education in developing nations. There, some folks were starting to complain that kids were focusing too much on technology-oriented majors and careers to the neglect of the liberal arts.

Don't worry, American kids with their B.A. in Psychology will lead the next cultural revolution, what with Hollywood, MTV, and American Idol...
Although I admit, I've swallowed my pride and have decided to go back to school. First step, finish my A.A. in Liberal Arts this fall. [:-]
