Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock(MADE IN ***AN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA ) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG ). He put on a dress shirt ( MADE IN SRI LANKA ), designer jeans ( MADE IN SINGAPORE ) and tennis shoes(MADE IN KOREA ). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA ) he sat down with his calculator( MADE IN MEXICO ) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE INTAIWAN ) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA ) he got in his car ( MADE IN GERMANY ) filled it with GAS from Saudi Arabia and continued his search for a good payingAMERICAN JOB . At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (Made In Malaysia ), Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL ) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA .....
Yes, that's right, if you're an unskilled factory worker, you've probably lost your job to a foreign competitor. Guess it's time to get a GED and learn some skills.

This is completely false and ignorant thinking.I know engineers and computer programmers that have lost their jobs to UNFAIR foreign trade.
ALL JOBS are in jeopordy, not just the unskilled laborers.I for one have an engineering degree and have been a tool maker for 19 years and have been layed off from this.I am also in danger as we speak of being layed off again.
My stepdad has been as high as the 3rd man from the top(engineering) of a big die casting plant locally and has been employed with them for 40 years. He is now looking at a layoff because a foreign company bought his company. They make Delta faucets, that claim to be American made but I know for a fact that most of the tooling is being made in China.
I am not against foreign trade but we need to use some common sense. We can not compete against 40 cent an hour labor in our skilled trades.Hell right now ,not even Mexico can compete against the Chinese.
On the positive side of things, the economy is doing well and there are jobs to be had. They just aren't in manufacturing,at any level of it.
The jobs are in support industries, such as heating/air.Or rebuilding pumps or things of this nature.

Bingo. Workers in this country have been sold down the river byignorant politicians and greedy corporate moguls who could care less about the US or its citizens.

There's nothing unfair about trade. America is better at doing a lot of things, but then again, sometimes we're not. Manufacturing is gone on a large scale. We just have too high a standard of living to pay workers what they want and still make a profit selling the goods or services. Really, are we just supposed to isolate ourselves economically and act like foreign competitors don't exist? The consumer will end up paying more to save a bygone workforce from unemployment. Ridiculous.
People need to work in fields that are relevant. As fast as technology changes today, careers sometimes must as well. It's sink or swim in a free America, so people need to think hard about doing what it takes to live a prosperous life. Nothing good comes easy.

Workers and Big Labor demonstrate the exact same overwhelming self-interest by demanding wages and other compensation that exceed theirmarket values as employees. Unions are going crazy trying to figure out how to stop millions more members from losing their jobs as industries falter, and sad to say it, but they often did it to themselves.
One of the problems with America competing is the American worker, I am a supervisor in manufacturing and I can tell youalot (not all)people want to be on light duty, FMLA or disability. Companies have to pay out the nose for nothing just so these people can set around a party, its pathetic. If someone actually has a problem I have nothing against them drawing benifits or being on light duty, but the simple fact is American companies can't pay for someone to set around for months and from what I have seen that is what alot of employees are after an easy ride thru life. I dont blame these companies from vacating the premises.

Well he looked like a twelve point when in shot him.
Tell me how an American is going to compete against 40 cents an hour.I can't even drive to work for that.
That is unfair no matter how you try to spin it.It is affecting all trades, some more than others. It is just a matter of time before it gets to yours.
An American can't--that's the point! He/shemust find a job in an industry that is competitive and thriving. Not all companies profit, and there are a few big ones out there that are falling apart. Organized employees who milk the labor system for all they can get obviously don't help an already dire situation.
Life is full of change, and it's irrational to expect it not to be. Are you going to cry for the cotton picker, or the mule driver, or the horseman now that modern industry has created better? What about the TV antenna repairman? He got the short end of the stick with those damned cable and satellite, didn't he?
Industries come and go. American workers have to adapt--that's what has helped make this countryas great as it isnow, and a big part of that greatnesswill disappear as soon as we stop working and start whining about how luxurious we should have it because our parents did well for 40 years onGM's payroll.
Today America produces its economic might using computers, not wrenches. There is no turning back now that technology allows the world to tradeso efficiently on the global scale. If we pretend it isn't happening, Europe and Asia will dominate us economically at first, and later on diplomatically and militarily. We still have a lot of greatness left in this country, and it's too early to give up and become another has-been empire in history. People need to get with the program and accept things for what they are.
