RE: Monica Pleads 5th!
Whewwww!!!! For a minute there, I was afraid this was gonna be more Monica Lewinsky stuff. [:'(] Got real tired of hearing about her.
What's interesting is how the news and some Dems are managing to tie all of this together into one big conspiracy accusation. Congress (and that includes many of these Dems who voted for the Patriot Act before they decided to wish they voted against it) also gave the President the authority to hire new Deputy AG's without getting congressional approval. The President has always had the authority to fire Deputy AG's and the AG himself. It's pretty dishonest (also known as lying) to imply that something which is legal (and was voted upon by congress) is somehow illegal. They may not like it, even want to change it but that is a legislative process and not some PR witch hunt in the press.
I think it is proper to examine any phone calls or contacts that any or all members of congress made to Deputy AG's about ongoing congressional corruption cases. Such calls may be routine, out of curiosity and perfectly legit or allowed by current law (congress gets to check up on just about anything in this country). Even a suspect has the right to call up the local DA and ask about his case although the DA might decline to speak with him, depending upon the status of the investigation. And such calls may not be legit, especially if the congressman/woman is trying to influence the outcome of the investigation in an improper manner.
I'm disappointed that certain members of congress are running around making witch hunt accusations for which they have absolutely no proof and are essentially acting like national enquirer reporters. I expect better of anybody in congress. I'm also irritated to no end about some members deliberately mentioning falsehoods when they know better. I realize that most congressional politicians are going to sink to this lower level but it doesn't mean I have to like it.
