Actually, the NY Times has admitted this story is true. They interviewed several military women about rape and found out the week before printing that one female had lied about being in Iraq and was never in Iraq at all. The times also said they chose not to reprint their magazine because of the cost to do so and chose instead to publish a correction, approximately 1 week after they knowlingly printed false information and 2 weeks after they knew such information was false.
As you'll recall, the Times has had problems with false information being printed before. Previously, it was their reporters and perhaps editors who failed to live up to their commitment to the truth. This time (no pun intended), it is management who decided to print a lie because it was going to cost them printing costs to correct the lie. for some reason, it is okay for a newspaper to knowingly print a lie and then later issue a correction, probably buried in a subsequent publication.
Let me ask you a question. How would you feel about a person who knowingly lied about you and then wanted to make amends a week later and hope nobody found out about the lie. Would you honestly think such a person had much credibility or integrity?
