stop terror attacks in the US? I pose this question, as I was listening to the comments of someone on the radio on the way into work this morning and his position was that it was ridiculous to think that fighting insurgents in Iraq did anything to prevent terror attacks in the US. I am interested in the opinions of others on this. Thanks.
I think fighting insurgents in Iraq will go a long way toward preventing terror attacks in the US. Maybe not tomorrow or the next day, but in the long-term? Sure.
If/when Iraq is stabalized and becomes a flourishing democracy, it'll serve as a backbone for the entire region.
On the other hand, if we pull out, there's little doubt that the entire situation in Iraq will fall into complete, ruthless chaos. I can easily envision an Iraq ruled by tyrants and thugs where al Quada has free reign to set up training camps, similar to what they had pre-9/11 in Afghanistan.

Ifferd
Are you suggesting Sunni's are not terroists?
I still have not formulated my oppion on the war. I think there are too many factors yet to be seen, or will never be seen due to the war. Something needed to be done about Iraq. IF the U.N. would do its job none of this would have come about. We are about to see the same thing with Korea and Iran, but it does appear the U.N. might take a stronger stance this time. They just might put these contries in a paper bag and not wet it first. OR slap them with noodles, not limp ones either.

I guess I find it hard to believe that fighting insurgents in Iraq, can stop/stem anyone from entering the US with just about anything from Mexico, or just coming stateside legally (with no prior historyknown), obtaining the right terror tools and commiting a terror attack.

It wont. Thats the greatness of the terroist, they have all the time in the world, are very patient, and are not going to put up a front to fight on. Your right, I agree, Iraq will not cure terroist. Im holding judgment to see if it has taken a home base from them or if it sends any message to countries willing to harbor terroist.

The Iraqinvasionhas gone from a noble causeto a civil war. Now we are acting as school yard teachers...getting blown up/kicked around. We should beallowing the local Iraq Gov. take control, if they can and progress towardhanding it over to them.
Not many winners in a civil war situation.

Break down some of the chain of events. We sustained some hits that various terror organizations took responsibility for like:
Pan Am 103 crash in Lockerbie in 1988
Attack on Khobar Towers in 1996
The Embassy bombings in 1998
The USS Cole attack in 2000
9/11 in 2001
and others
Post 9/11 we responded by immediately going to Afghanistan and defeated the Taliban all under thereason of fighting terror. If that invasion did anything it told the world that we sick of taking hits and would fight back. We set up a new government with relative ease and then warned Sadam that Iraq would be next if he didn't change his ways. Iraq thumbed their nose at us and we went there and in a matter ofweeks took control of that country with an awesome display of weaponry and military tactics. The world at that time took notice and I feel terror organizations left us alone for fear they would be next. Many targets were hit in Europe and Africa so they were still engaged in terror but not directly aimed at the USA. At this point in time we were still on top and should have found a way to immediately turn over the country to UN peace keepers and as large a coalition of the free world that was possible. For some reason (oil) we wouldn't let many of the larger European or South American countries get involved. I feel that was the start of our downfall there and that action cemented our involvement for years to come. In 2002 the world knew we were #1 and public opinion both inside the US and world wide was high. Without an exit plan we slowly sank to the bottom of the pond and now the only way to get out is to drain the pond. Timing is everything and I feel that our inability to resolve the internal strife in Iraq has actually turned the tide and given the terror world more resolve to defeat us. IMO the Iraq turning point is after we took control we stood by and let the sectarians rape and pillage unabated. That lack of action on our part emblazoned them and allowed them to regroup and fight again for control. We have always been great at military fights. It is the politicalportion of war that we fail to show our best side.
